Suggestion to cover up vermiculite ceiling in the kitchen, any recommendation on Sydney North shore?

Hi all,

I am planning to put a false ceiling in the Kitchen to cover up the vermiculite instead of getting rid of them. The area is just around 7 sq. m. Anyone has done similar thing before with any recommendations, suggestions or things to look out?

Appreciate any help.

Cheers,

  • It may contain asbestos so you need to be weary of that… If you think it's safe you can scrape and sand the high points then skim coat it with plaster… another way is to attach battens and then use plaster boards.

There's some info on the skim coat technique here, but it's not fun sanding a ceiling…

    • Well, I have sent the sample to test and report back no abestos was found.

I have thought about scrapping but it seems a very difficult job as they stuck on the ceiling for so long already. This may be my first choice if I am doing an all-round reno. So, interim, I would think about just covering it up.

any recommendation on Sydney North shore?
    - Id suggest the lower north Shore suburbs of Roseville, Lindfield or Killara. Easiest if you have to drive into the CBD each day.

      ? which & what?

  • I am doing the same for my popcorn ceiling. My original ceiling wasn't very high so trying to lower it as little as possible.
Then installing downlighs on it .

    • How large your ceiling? And have you got a quote already? The minimum to get downlight installed is about 100mm, I believe.

  • My ceiling is about 30 square metre, I got quote for 4K.
We managed to find downlights about 50mm length, but I think they need extra 10 -20mm to install it.

    • That is big. Mine one is only like 7 sq m.

    • emiko: do you remember the make or model of these short bodied downlights?

      Cheers

  • Its martec downlight. I think around 20 dollars eac .
