So it's a normal mechanical HDD with a large cache

    • +1

That sounds a lot more accurate.

    • +2

Huge cache might be more accurate.

      • It's also 5400 rpm

        • +4

5400rpm doesn't tell the whole story though. These hybrid drives outperform a high-performance 7200rpm hard drive in pretty much every category, while using a fair bit less power.

These drives are a great compromise between large storage and high data rates at an affordable price. Yes, an SSD is faster, but it's also at least 5x the price for the same capacity.

5400rpm doesn't tell the whole story though.

I was referring to how fast the platters spin.

        • +4

Yeah, I know. But 5400rpm typically indicates a low performance drive, and these drives are definitely not low-performance.

The platter speed is not really relevant with this kind of drive, and the description on this page doesn't say anything about the platter speed of this item.

My understanding is that the 5400 platter speed was adopted as a power-saving measure. 7200rpm uses more power to get more performance, and the 8Gb cache on this drive makes that unnecessary.

        • +3

thanks for clearing that up. Just in case anyone thought the flash memory spun at 5400rpm..

  • Actually these are the 3rd gen Seagate Momentus drive and have 8GB SSD tacked onboard. For some reason Seagate seems to have dropped the "Momentus" branding.

    • Momentus XT to be precise.

they used to have normal 7200rpm Momentus drives w/o the 'large' 8gb cache.

    PS4 HDD??

    • +1
      • That was actually a lot more relevant and informative than I thought it would be.

        Nice!

    • Got one from MSY for $145.00 so this is a good price.
      Straight into my PS4!!

You can also buy local stock from about the same price with warranty intact.

    USD 95 + 9 = AUD 105 + 10 = AUD 115

    MWave = $105 + $9 shipping.

    Edit: This one's 3.5"

    • +1

thats 3.5" the 2.5" is $135 from msy

      • for $20 more…..local stocks!

I would stick with local! unless it's more than $50 saving

  • 9.5mm ):

SSD "like" are you kidding? Is your 9-5 job a sales rep?
1TB SSD is easily over $500

  • How reliable are these compared to a normal disk or to an SSD ?

    • Got the 500gb one when it first came out. It Went into my laptop and 2 years ago into my desktop. Draw your own conclusions. :)

    • +1

Perhaps you get the unreliability of BOTH all rolled into one. LOL

    • these are still more reliable than SSD which have higher failure rates……

    • And yet you commented above, acting like you know everything

  • Really like the look of this, think I'll get one.

  • How big is the cache on this one?
