John West Tuna Tempters 95g 12 Cans for $9.96 ($0.83 Each!) @ Woolworths Strathfield NSW

660

It's becoming a fishy kind of day today.

Some say, Sirena is the better tuna (I agree) but we as OzBargainers will rarely let a good deal off the hook.

At $0.83 cents a can, this is a catch!

This was spotted in Strathfield NSW.

EDIT: According to the catalogue, 12 cans for $10 ($0.8333333 per can) at all other Woolies. (Thanks 1bug)

    Meowmy deal…

    From the NSW catalogue:
    - $0.94 each, or
    - Any 12 for $10.00 (~$0.833 each)

    http://www2.woolworthsonline.com.au/shop/seasonal/Woolworths…

    • And WA so it must be nationwide?

    • Cheers 1bug. I thought initially why the deal only available in Strathfield store, sounds fishy. But now good to know. And it's John West, the best.

  • In Qld too

  • Its any woolies.

    I bought 24 tonight.
hmm, should I have gotten more? You can never have too much tuna right.

  • There were only 11 left on the shelf at my local…

    • +2

      Bait and switch!

  • I bought 72 cans.

    • Did the cashier scan every single tin or were they clever enough to enter them as multiples? lol

      • +1

Depends on if they were different varieties or all the same. If different then it would be quicker to scan them rather than count then do multiples of each.
Woolworths/Safeway are on a computerised system, with it knowing (well, supposed to know but counts are often out) of how much of each item is on hand, and order more when it drops to a pre-determined level.

      • haha. This cashier was smart enough just to put in a multiple of 72 when I told her there were only two flavours.
(But then again, maybe not smart in terms of inventory management for store, considering the comment above)

Sometimes when I buy large amounts like this, the cashier does actually scan each one..

You don't have to buy in multiples of 12. You only need to buy at least 12.

So if something is 2 for $2, you can buy 3 for $3 or 5 for $5. It doesn't need to be a multiple of the original minimum qty required.

      • +2

I buy them in 12s because of the little cardboard trays that make it easier to store at home.

        • Good point.

  • 12 is pretty high for a multibuy…

Reminds me of them Drumsticks icecreams they did once, which was I think 5 for $20. Not too many people I know have a fridge with enough spare room for 5 boxes of them. Needless to say they didn't sell well.

    • +1

The space required for 12 cans of tuna would be about half the size of a drumstick box. I think everyone would have at least that much cupboard space.

      • +3

I keep them on a single tall stack at work. Its great at keeping away co workers. For co workers who are just bad, I open a can as they approach. But for really terrible co workers, they are the perfect shape and size to use as missiles.

      • In the case of the tuna, it's not about space. It's about quantity. You have to buy 12 of them to get any discount. This is the highest I've ever seen on a multibuy. One day it could be 20 or 50. At some point you'd have to say it's more than I would want to buy at one time.

The drumsticks was about space because it had to go in your freezer.

They've been doing the 10 tubs of Chobani yogurt for $10 for a while now. I felt that was heaps as I was putting them into the trolley lol. At least tuna has a long shelf life and can sit in the pantry for ages without going bad. The yogurt was like 'shit, pressure to eat all this yogurt before getting sick of it'

        • 10 or 12 isn't too bad.
Whiskers was on promo last week, not sure if it was a multi buy but I saw people buying 5 or 6 full slabs (24 cans) at a time.

          EDIT - As below. :)

        • At 83c a tin, compared to the normal price of $1.68 or whatever they normally are (wouldn't have a clue, don't buy them full price!!) anyone who buys Whiskas would have been nuts to not stock up!!! I bought enough to last a few months!!! (For my cats, not me…)

  • Cheaper than cat food. My cat will love these

    • +1

Clearly you missed the sale at Woolworths last week? 24 cans of Whiskas for $20? (& if you ordered online, they only cost $19.92 per 24)
Those tins also worked out to be 83c each, but at 400g tins, much better value than 95g tins!!! Also, with this tuna, there's only like 2 varieties safe to give to cats: in springwater & in brine….Whiskas had about 14 varieties online at Woolworths.
If you're after small tins of cat food, I suggest you look around, as there's a few places selling Fancy Feast for 70c or less per tin….

    • @sjobeck be careful about feeding your cat fish or your cat might end up with a blocked urinary tract and will die a short and painful death

      • Also taurine i believe which canned tuna lacks. Without taurine you cat might go blind

        • So just give the cat some Red Bull too. Dats got taurine!

          Relax, I joke, I joke.

  • personally i'd pay slightly more for the salmon. not only does it taste better, there is less mercury to worry about

    • My understanding is that John West (and a number of other brands these days) use skipjack tuna which are less of a mercury concern.

    • For a cheapie widely available Tuna, they always use the cheaper variant, which is the skipjack. A lot smaller than the older brothers, yellowfin/bluefin.

    • Genuine question: which is more sustainable? Tuna or salmon? Anyone?

  • Can anyone comment on the Portview Brand Tuna from Aldi? They are always 79c!!

    • +1

I can, I've had them many times, & compared to the way both John West & Greenseas have gone lately (very oily & many of the flavours are now spicier than they were, or seem to have chilli added, if I wanted chilli I'd buy it) I'm preferring the Aldi tuna!!
Plus they have one with capers in…yum…now they just need one with olives in!!!
So yeah, my opinion is that they're definitely worth it!

    • I also buy the Portview brand Tuna from Aldi and find it just a good as the other brands, but Aldi is a couple hours drive from where I live, so only get there every few months. Do need to do a restock for caned Tuna, so will be buying at Woolies whilst this special is on. All made in Thailand, including the John West. Will have an Aldi store in town later in the year, look forward to that.

I agree with amy_c, Aldi Portview definitely worth it.

John West / Sirena / - Which is better

If some of you havnt realised or spent effort to read the back of these cans, 99% of Canned Tuna in Australia (Sirena, John West, Safcol, Coles, Woolies) are the same Tuna (Skipjack) from the same process plant (Thailand)

You're paying for the brand, the only 2 differences you may get from these is:

A.) Better ingredients Olive Oil, chilli
B.) How they were caught; Pole & line, Trawled etc

I dont see how one vendor can be better than the other given they're the same specific Fish processed in the same plant in Thailand. I have many concerns as to why the hell these companies have processing in that Country but that is a different topic which may be a little offensive to some locals there. I know "cheaper" comes into place, but that brings a whole swag of crap with it such as hygiene, OH&S and other shortcommings

The fact that they dont tell you where they were caught from leads me to believe in the Asia-Pac ocean in Thailand too.

    • Serina is definately better tasting IMHO. The tuna is in chunks and the oil seems nicer, I think there is universal agreement on this? yes…no?

either way though, this deal is the CHEAPEST tuna deal i've seen, in a while, long while.

  • Sirena is only nicer because of it's marketing:

"Italian Style" , Can marketing and design make it look like a superior model.

The Chunks? I cant agree, Chunks are just the way they're sliced, many other brands do Chunks.

But yes I agree, the oil is better, which goes back to point A.) in my previous post =)
