Under the matress

I was reading a thread here this morning and it got me thinking, how many ozbargainers out there keep a small stash of cold hard cash for emergencies and the like? This might be a few hundred dollars up to a few thousand?

Without revealing too much do you or someone you know keep any readily available cash on hand for just in case purposes or do you use a credit card or similar instead?

  • You need to keep a little cash.
When there have been major blackouts in New York, Auckland etc. if you had cash you could get dinner. If you didn't you couldn't. The only problem in my house is it gets raided from time to time.

    • how do you use the cash when the retailers would also have the blackout?

Candles for light, gas for cooking, key to open register?

Might even get a discount because the food can't be refrigerated.

  • Hiding cash is generally a bad idea - namely because if it goes missing it is very difficult to get back. Also you get no interest so inflation means it will be worth less every year.
I'm sure you've heard of the people who stashed large amounts of cash or gold in their house and then invariably get robbed.
Having funds in different accounts can have all the benefits (to my mind anyway).
You can get a low fee credit card with a limit around how much you would like to stash, and then just stash the card.

    • How can you use money in an account to buy things when the power is out?

      • Don't some retailers still have those zip zap machines? Though to be honest that's really old tech.

  • I've read a few 'worst case scenario' books and they recommend keeping a small amount of cash (say $300-500) hidden at home in case of an earthquake/blackout/zombie attack/riot/ATM network outage, etc.

I always keep cash for in case of a zombie riot.

All those Hollywood movies have taught me that Zombies are greedy, logical beings who can be bought out with cash.

  • I don't, but I really should.

a hard drive can't make me happy! how's that going to help on a lonely cold winter's night???

  • I keep a bit because I am disorganised, and often don't have time to stop by an atm when I'm running late and need to be somewhere that requires cash… Never more than a couple of hundred though!
