Gaming/uni laptop is this a good deal

Pretty much looking for a gaming laptop which is also for uni. Must be able to run DayZ, BF4 etc on at least medium.

Found this and thought it was pretty decent, I can get it shipped over to me as I have relatives where it is in stock: http://www.msy.com.au/home/8194-msi-gx60-3be-242au-amd-a10-5…

$1269

  • AMD's Richland A10-5750M
  • FUll HD display 15.6 inch
  • 8gb ram
  • 9 cell battery(reasonable for uni when using the power saving processor)
  • Blu ray
  • Radeon XT HD8970 Graphics 2GB
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Includes win 8 OS

Thoughts? Seems good value for a touch over 1k, which I usually aim for

  • BF4 on low settings seems more like what you'll able to play with on this laptop…

    • what is wrong with it, cpu bottleneck?

      • The CPU is okay. Is around 30-35 FPS okay with you? If thats fine, then yes - it'll work for medium. Some people do not feel the difference of a FPS 30+.

      • There are laptops in the same price range with better CPU's, but slower GPU's. So it's a bit of a toss up really.

        • Yes I've done a bit more research and according to notebook check.com the gpu is excellent. However the cpu can affect gaming quite a bit. For example with an i7 and the same gpu fps can be up to 30 better. I think I might have a more detailed look around, maybe look for something a bit more portable as well. Unfortunate thing is dayZ is horribly optimised so even upper end PC's struggle with it, I might just have to wait till its alpha finishes.

        • Yeah, that's always a let down. The GPU is always amazing with good RAM, SSD etc however the CPU always brings the whole laptop down.

It's probably because a less intensive CPU gives a portable laptop a longer battery life. After all, laptops should be for portability. In that case, it'll be hard for you also to find a more portable laptop without a compromise in hardware power.

I got this laptop last year in August for $965 for itspot.com.au. Well any game that I thrown on this laptop, runs perfectly on medium /high using(1920×1080) resolution with above 40fps so I am pretty happy with it. Go for this one. I think its newer version is known as MSI GE 60 20D! Its wiegh 2.4kg which is light(gaming/uni in your case) compared to high end gaming laptops.

  • Founds this from dell refurbished, thoughts? I'm willing to give up on some of the gaming capability for the price, I know this means I won't be able to play BF and other high tier games.

    inspiron 15r

    i7-4500U processor
    8GB Dual Channel DDR3
1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard ( Will upgrade to an SSD in the near future)
    HD 8850M 2GB GDDR5

    $699

    • This one is a dual core i7 if you need a quad core i7 look for 4700 above model numbers

  • +1

You're better off buying a cheap unit for Uni and then a gaming rig at home.

    • Guess so eh, like a surface pro 2 or Asus t100( I already bought for another family member from a previous deal). Then gaming rig at home. Thing is I like the portableness if a laptop for lan sessions and discrete gaming, so if a reasonable enough bargain comes up I'll probably bite the bullet. Laptops do have major heating issues though in my experience…
