Avoid Dodgy National RoadService Australia (NRA)!!

I just want to warn people about NRA, where I bought a 2 year National Roadservice Australia Plus membership benefits for $129 from Our Deal. I had problems with my car not starting and called up for a jumpstart. The car started running and I drove for 30mins and got the car home but the next day it would not start. I rang again and they said since it is 12 hours since I called them I cannot have any assistance. I was told I have to provide evidence that the battery was not faulty in a week's time and then I can ask for assistance! I ended up joining NRMA for $280 to have immediate service.

The following is what they claimed they offer:

  • Breakdown Related Towing
If your vehicle is immobilised or unsafe to drive, it will be transported to the nearest licensed mechanic or your home. Up to 75km is provided at no cost (up to 50km in metro/major country areas). A limit of one tow/assistance applies per incident.

  • Flat Battery Assistance
National Roadservice Australia will jump start your vehicle or assist you to get a new battery (battery and fitting at additional cost) or provide a tow in accordance with the Breakdown Related Towing provisions.

What was confusing was the NRA attendant said the battery is fine but NRMA attendant said immediately it was the battery. If I had know then I would have had the car towed to the mechanic. The NRMA said if I continued to jumpstart the car the battery would have exploded!

These deals seem so attractive but I don't think it is worth the time and trouble!!

Well they got your car working to get you home, didn't they. I think they fulfilled their duty.

sounds to me like you didn't read the terms and conditions, they're not dodgy at all.

  • They did what you paid them to do… get you out of trouble.
Alternative road service schemes are not and never have been equivalent to the motoring organisation ones.
You get what you pay for with these things….
Best to get that flat battery replaced.
