95/98 Petrol and E10 at United

Hey all,
I just bought my first car recently (woo!), and I went to my fill in my car at United. I was about to fill up using 95 as I had decided against using e10 in the new car, but noticed that United had a paper sign that said upto 10% ethanol in their 95, and 98 products.

I'm not very car savvy, still learning the ins and outs, so can someone explain, is this 95 different to 95 at woolies/coles stations?
How does this differ to e10 at woolies/coles?
the e10 95 blend was actually cheaper than unleaded 91 (no ethanol), by about 3c/L, is this because ethanol has less fuel economy?

I ended up using 91 instead, because it was the only non e10 fuel there. Right decision?

Thanks,

  • The 91, 95, etc are the RON (Octane Rating). Do not use a lower number than what your car is specified for, whatever your view on E.

Yes, E has less energy per unit so will give you less km/l, so cheaper.

  • Look in the owner's manual and at fuel cap area for whatever fuel is suitable for your car. using RON 98 on a RON 95 recommended car might just be a waste of money.

If you love your car, I would recommend using Shell, BP or Woolies. Yes it is a little dearer there but I think they spend more on maintaining their fuel tank underneath and changing filters and all that so you can have cleaner fuel. What it means is that it is less likely to eff up your car's fuel pump or clog up your car's fuel filter.

(Or maybe they just spend more on the surface to trick us into believing their tanks are better? god knows :P )

Some would recommend NOT filling when the fuel tanker truck is there because when they transfer fuel, it will mix up all the debris that has been settled at the bottom of the fuel station tank, and you will end up getting all that goodness.

    No comments on E10.

  • Don't use E10. Burns quicker and is not meant for most vehicles.

  • Alright!, thanks guys, think I'll stick to 95 :)

  • Congrats on the car! I feed mine only 98 (even though it is good to run on E10) and I find I get a lot more out of a tank with the 98 than the 91 or E10. As for the ethanol content in V-Power and Vortex 98 my understanding is that they have none…but I could be wrong I am relying on Wikipedia and Caltex's website. The benefits of using the premium fuels is that they are cleaner and include detergents to help keep your fuel system and engine clean
