Hey guys, when I'm in the garage my tablet device struggles to maintain a connection to my WiFi router because it's on the other side of the property. I just need something to extend the range… I don't need speed because I'll just be uploading text.

First thing: try repositioning the router to avoid obstacles in the way of the antenna signal as much as possible. If that fails, try positioning the laptop or router as close to a window as possible. If that fails, try an external USB wi-fi adapter with an external antenna and then disable the computer's wi-fi. If that fails….

I made one of these years ago with great success. I also doubled the template size for my particular application.
Keep in mind a metal garage is gonna be tricky to get good signal in, so you may need to bust out the bigger bucks to get more capable hardware or simply be more creative with positioning.
If all that fails, I'd sooner get one of these well before getting any range extender:
