Do not buy Aldi / Medion 31.5" TV MD30612

This TV has a design fault, it was sitting in my apartment for 8 months and when I started using the TV it lasted about a week until it would not turn on

Here are a few people who have the same issue and there are others scattered over the net;

http://www.productreview.com.au/p/medion-md-30612-md-30614.h…

This model is not even listed on the Medion site so I would suggest that they are trying to distance themselves form it

Hope this helps if the deal get's listed again as it seems to always be on sale

most of these products are Made in China

    • "most of these products are Made in China"

LOL…. very few are not incuding Panasonic!!

  • mine has been fine since purchase

Medion is an Aldi brand. it's listed on the Aldi site-

    • mine has now died this death.

      • opened it up to see if there was anything I could do. interesting it is Chimei brand. however when you enter the LCD driver + backlight PCB numbers they come up as Samsung.

I think I've located the problem with the MD30612 Medion 31.5" TV

power was getting to the TV so it wasn't a main board issue.

as there are 2 backlight panels then it is unlikely they both failed at the same time.

it seemed, there fore, to be a panel "firing up" problem hence possibly the LCD driver board.

So I bought the V320HJ2CPE2 board from aliexpress for US$25 delivered. Installed it (undo 15 or so screws, take off the rear cover, 2 more screws on the board, disconnect 3 ribbon cables) and so far it seems to be working no problem.

          @altomic:

Hi mate, I seem to have the same problem now. It's my girlfriend's and she wouldn't really have the money right now to get a new one..

So I just wanted to really clarify what you did!

So you actually fixed your Rv by replacing that panel you bought from aliexpress?!

If so, I want to give it a crack myself!

Hope to hear back from you

          Cheers

@MelBourne: hi, yeah. as I said above. lie the tv face down, remove stand, then 15 philips head screws (or so) to take off the back of the tv. that exposes the LCD driver board. that's easily removed (2 screws and 3 ribbon cables -easy to disattach - just open/slide the clasps). pop in the replacement. and then reattach/rescrew everything. you're done!!!

here is the link to replacement LCD driver board on aliexpress for US$30 delivered.

it will take about a month to get here. I've used aliexpress ~300 times. no real problems.i highly recommend it.

The only thing I have found with my TV now (it's in the spareroom and only used 1 once a month and never left on standby) is that when I turn the powerpoint on, then I have to wait maybe 60seconds and then I can hit the power-on button on the remote, and the TV will then fire up. If I don't wait (and press the remote control power-on button) then the TV power LED won't turn from red (standby) to green (on) and so then I have to turn it off at the powerpoint, wait 5 seconds, turn the powerpoint on and then wait.

maybe if I left it on standby with the powerpoint turned on and the TV always in standby mode(red LED) it would fireup straight away. Or maybe I'm too impatient and my new TV (Changhong 40" - $315 special @ DSE ) is just too good.

does that all make sense. feel free to clarify anything. but ultimately I would recommend that you have a go at fixing your girlfriends TV, it really is easy.

@altomic: Thanks a whole bunch for the detailed reply.

I feel confident that I could complete that repair, so thanks for the link.

However, I dont feel confident that your fix is really the fix! The issue you just described with the annoying power-on issues is pretty much what Im experiencing now…

I leave the TV turned off at the wall and then power it on for a minute before turning it on with the remote, other wise all sorts of strange things happen. The strangest being when the green light turns on… but the screen never wakes up.

I will still look in to this though.

          Thanks again,

        • @altomic:
Just wondering if the driver board replacement fix is still working?
I am thinking of doing similar.
Has anyone else tried this fix successfully?

        • @Vkburd: yeah, just tried it and it works fine.

turn on mains power, wait 20 seconds - hit the remote control power button. all good.

On a side note- I barely watch the TV as it's in bedroom (if you know what I mean - nudge, nudge - not really).

        • @altomic: FYI… My MD30612 has a V460HJ1-C01 LCD driver board instead. Same price on AliExpress, so I've ordered it. But I've found a decent interim workaround: https://mousejiggler.codeplex.com stops the monitor turning off in the first place.

  • Take it back. You would expect a TV to last more than 8 months, even if it was of poor quality. You'd think a year would be absolute minimum. You should be able to get a refund under requirements of Australian Consumer Law.

    • At at least 8 months old they might be pushing it to ask for a refund, but most certainly entitled to repair or replacement.

  • You state it has a design fault but don't say what it is?

    • Has a self-destruct button right next to the power button. It was dark, OP pressed the wrong one.

  • how they didnt release a recall puzzles me

  • That's weird, my MD30614 still working fine since 2013, never got problems, either for PVR, TV, PC, Xbox, or chrome. I use Harmony 650 as the remote and never use original remote. Best value for money in my opinion.

  • Hi All,
I have had the exact same symptoms as everyone else on the net with this Medion LED LCD flat screen TV model MD30612AUS-A.
I have done a lot of reading online about other brands with this same issue as well.
From what I have gathered it seems as though the single only diode on the PCB could be what is causing the fault and has been replaced on different model TV's with success.
Unfortunately I am not a TV electrician but understand some of the basics in electronics and would like to try to change this myself but do not know how to determine what a suitable diodes specs should be to replace the original one with?
If anyone here knows what readings should I be seeing with a multi-meter from the original diode on the board to check whether it is faulty only if that is possible to read without power on the device as I am not that confident to work on this whilst the PCB is on mains power?
Could anyone confirm that this is a possible solution and where I could source a diode for replacement from?

  • A new problem has just begun for all owners of this model.

Effective yesterday (26th Nov) Channel 9 has changed its Chnl 90 GEM station to Chnl 9HD (simulcasting the SD version of the Chnl 9 channel but in the 1920 x 1080 HD format) —- it has also changed a number of its other channels. This new transmission is being broadcast in the MPEG-4 (not MPEG-2) format and this TV will not apparently accept any transmission in the MPEG-4 format.

It appears that progressively the various Free To Air channels (and any new ones) are going to be swapped over to this new MPEG-4 system and as a result it is most unlikely that the set will be able to tune into these new offerings. This will include "Freeview TV"

I believe that both Chnl 7 and Chnl 10 will be shortly introducing simulcast versions of their current SD programs in HD, meaning that this TV set will not be able to receive/show them.

Although not important to me, I believe that the set will not receive the "Racing Channel" as this is also broadcast in the MPEG-4 format.

The set does however make a very good computer monitor (the main reason I purchased the unit) !!!!!!!

  • Quick Workaround: This free applet https://mousejiggler.codeplex.com stops the monitor turning off in the first place. Too easy!

  • Yeah, I tried changing the caps, still would turn off, just binned it.
