Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ RND4410 - 4 TB for $2199

32

Based on a search of staticice, this is by far the cheapest RND4410 available:

http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=RND4410&spo…

Obviously you may prefer to buy a diskless unit, but for 4TB straight out of the box, this is a pretty good option.

For $2200?? wow, why not make your own

Motherboard with gigabit (and 4 sata connections) - $140 (be generous)
CPU - $60 (or whatever you have lying around)
Case - Lian Li (on of the small ones) $150
    PSU - $70
    4 * 1.5TB HDD Sata = $800
    FReeNAS = FRee

There you go, a 6TB NAS for $1220 (half the price and 50% bigger)

Also Ht were selling a 2TB nas for $400 a few weeks back.

    • But then you have to do all the configuration and stuff but this thing work out of the box, and have the following missing:

      • Display LCD (u can use your monitor for your invention)
      • your built probably consume more power?
      • doesn't have all the networking features
      • no hot-swap

correct me if i'm wrong :D If everyone have the same thoughts as you then the NAS devices seller go bankrupt :D

      • Only one you were correct on is the more power one. And it'd take many years (probably longer than it'd be useful) for the power cost to be and issue.

FreeNAS is designed to be controlled remotely (no KB/mouse/LCD needed), has more networking features than this NAS, and supports hot swap. You'd have to get hot swap caddies or an appropriate SATA controller to get past that problem, but that'd only add $100-$200.

    • Apples and oranges, Davo. Horses for courses. Different strokes for different folks.

Btw, I posted the 2TB NAS for $400 bargain ;)

  • Way cheaper options available …
    i.e. Dlink ($595), Thecus ($649), Promise ($699), Qnap ($704) and add 4 x 1tb HDD's ($130 each) still works out to be a lot cheaper.
Main reason for a NAS is they are easy to setup and use less power than a normal machine.

it may not be the cheapest NAS device around but if you were looking to purchase this particular brand and model then it's several hundred dollars less than the other stores

      For a 'bundle', yes.

      But you can get:
      - The base model for $999
      - Four 1TB HDDs for $556
      Total $1,555

      EDIT

      Or you can get
      - The base model plus 4x250G drives for $1049
      - Sell those four HDDs on Ebay for about $30 each
      - Four 1TB HDDs for $516
      Total ~$1445

      • Apples and oranges again!

The drives you've priced are not the same as the drives in the RND4410.

And you're recommending putting Deathstars in a $1k+ NAS? Wow.

        • -1

I apologise, I wasn't really paying attention to which one I was linking. There's Samsung, WD and Seagate offerings for only $40 more total. Although the Deathstar debacle died down… what… about 5 years ago? So it's being a tad precious. Of late the Seagate ones have had the worst reputation where previously they had the best.

What drives are included in the bundle? They're not listed.

      • It's like saying:

Don't buy Dell or HP Desktops, I can build my own for cheaper with the higher specs.

But then, why have they been selling so many of those overpriced machines O.O

        • mainly because of product support. those who understand pc well most often build their own, like you and me. but most ppl spend their time on an unrelated occupation and prefer to let a product's warranty take care of the machine.

so tantryl's very much right. if u understand NAS enough to get one, why not save hundreds and build it yourself? the warranty is the same, just for individual components rather than the entire thing.

not a bargain in my books
