ASUS DSL-N55U N600 Dual Band Wireless Modem Router $149 @ Digital Star

41

I've been researching for a while and procrastinating even longer but I finally purchased this modem router, I hope i made the right decision.

Price is $149 when picked up in store Auburn, NSW 2144. Shipping is too expensive from this shop but they have the same offer on ebay $2 more and it includes free shipping:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140829975141?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

Cashback is available to the first 100 buyers only, so not I have wrote price as $149, not as $119 after 30 cashback as you may not get it.

Cashback details here: http://www.powerbuy.com.au/asus-networking/
Cashback offer was previously by Asus but now has expired but according to Powerbuy it's still available until end of March (cashback via Powerbuy)

I will update this post as item arrives and setup completed.

Just read the fine print again, this time with my glasses on. Cashback is limited to the first 100 buyers/claimers which means they can get out of this very easily.

You can reserve the cashback prior to buying so at least you know pre-purchase if you have the cashback or not.

        • How to do this please?

Even if you are one of the first hundred, it's not really a great bargain. There are better routers out there for the money.

  • It doesn't apply to this particular model according to the article, but a number of Asus routers have been found with security flaws

Just putting it out there :)

From now on, buy with 802.11ac

All new devices this year will ship with 802.11ac the new fast (5x) wireless standard just ratified

Its backwards compatible so dont worry

Some early devices like galaxy s4 and HTC One have built in 802.11ac…but this year it will take off rapidly

    • There are far more important things to consider when buying a modem than the supported 802.11 standards.

All new devices this year will ship with 802.11ac the new fast (5x) wireless standard just ratified

And none of them will actually come close to using all of that bandwidth.

      • Of course, but better be future proof.

802.11n will be phased from sales next year.

High bandwidth apps (voice and video) And explosion of wireless devices will require better WiFi at home and office. AC is superior and has been designed for this high density high bandwidth future

  • In this price range I would go for a Billion 7800NXL:
    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=billion+780…

Broadcom chipset, great WiFi range, Fibre-ready, insane amount of configuration options (though there's a Quick Start Wizard for the technically-challenged) and incredible support from Billion (the Whirlpool forums Billion sub-forum is regularly frequented by reps and they often include customer feedback into future firmware updates; which are very regular).

    • I had a billion VoIP modem before and nothing but problems but I missed that this one doesn't have AC and only n so I'm going to cancel my purchase as it is weekend they have not shipped it yet. Thanks so much for your comments. Please keep sending recommendations through for WiFi modem router and I'm 8k from the exchange so my adsl2 speeds are very lame 5mb DL) but next year I'm moving and hoping to get nbn.

Number one reason why I finally bought this Asus is gaming on ps4 (via wifi) and streaming movies from NAS to TV and using internet at the same time. Modem too far away from the man cave so it is all wireless inc movie streaming so I need something with fast WiFi inside the house.

  • Hmm..even with the cash-back, I think it's too much to pay for what is now outdated technology (Wireless N as opposed to AC)

    • In a country where the average Internet downstream speed is 5-8Mbp/s, how on earth is 80% of the Aussie population going to come close to saturating all of the available bandwidth on 802.11n, let alone 802.11ac?

If people would sometimes stop and think, rather than just blindly jumping on the neophilia bandwagon; consumers would get dicked around a lot less by clever marketing executives.

Oh look at that, another psuedo-intellectual post from Amar89 filled with over-complex diction trying to look smart on the internet.

Perhaps for in-home networking?? My Wireless N can't even stream 1080p from one side of the house to the other.

No moron is going to purchase a wireless AC router simply to get better ADSL2 speeds.

The additional range that wireless AC affords you coupled with the fact that it is less susceptible to interference makes it a clear-cut winner.

How about next time you stop to think before posting dribble. Home networking is a large part of Australia now; I know plenty of people with gigabit Ethernet (who actually utilise it). And for those of us who don't have the luxury of wired ports in every room, wireless AC is a solid compromise.

          psuedo-intellectual

^ Unfortunate time to gaffe like that.

I love that you consider me overly-complex and verbose; just for having the inclination to post more than: "Hurrrr bought it coz YOLO". Speaks volumes.

Perhaps for in-home networking?? My Wireless N can't even stream 1080p from one side of the house to the other.

Mine can just fine. A multitude of factors are at play there, none of them being that Wireless N is unfit for home networking.

No moron is going to purchase a wireless AC router simply to get better ADSL2 speeds.

You vastly overestimate the the intelligence of the average, non-tech savvy consumer.

How about next time you stop to think before posting dribble.

You're right, what I am doing. I should be encouraging everyone to be mindless consumerist slaves who bow to marketing pressure about the latest and greatest technology.

Home Networking is a niche hobby, and you and your interests do come close to coinciding with a majority of consumers. The average soccer mum and Uni student buy modems so they can download more HBO drivel faster, not because they are aware of the differences between wireless networking standards and how this may improve their PHY Link Rate on the 5Ghz band.

I know this may sound revelatory, but you need to escape the confines of that exclusivist bubble that we OzBargainers inhabit and think like a regular Joe for a second. Wireless AC is not a need and for a lower cost a more suitable modem can be had for a majority of people.

And for the love of God, stop taking my comments so personally on here. It's not a playground for goodness sake.

    • Thanks for your comment. Which would you recommend for fast in house wireless networking? Ps4, tablets, movie streaming etc. As phone plug is all in another room from where the ps4 and movie TV lives. I have poor adls speeds and am currently using a dgn3500 with ggigabit wired connection to my NAS and wireless streaming to another TV works OK but now my kids will be gaming on the ps4, using their tablets while I'll try and watch a movie so I'm expecting higher demands on the in house network.

      • I don't think you'd be disappointed with a Billion 7800NXL, which you can probably pick up for less than this.

By all means read the Billion sub-forum on Whirlpool; people there have posted "before and after" ADSL speeds and those quite a while from their exchanges are the ones who seem to benefit the most.

Like I said before, if you're on a crappy line or a good distance from your exchange, you really need a Broadcom chipset modem.

I've recommended the 7800NXL to about 3 people now on what I would consider very average connections (~5Mbp/s, high attenuation/SNR) and they've been nothing but blown away, especially when it came to WiFi range and performance.

I have one of these already, and I think it is decent. It seems to have 2 advantages over that suggested Billion, first this has 2 usb ports so you can have two hard drives streaming to TVs, PCs or tablets in the home, or one hard drive and one printer (the Billion has one). Also this has dual band WiFi, which I believe is better for streaming HD video around the home. It also seems to get quite hot, so you can warm your hands on it in winter (*NB may not be a useful feature).

Be sure to make sure the firmware is most up to date on these things as ASUS routers have been shown to be remotely exploitable and have only recently been patched.
