Naked DSL / Broadband / Internet

Dear Reader/s,

I'm looking for help as to how Naked DSL and Broadband work. As I wish to install an internet connection. I have been running on absolutely no internet connection at home for about 7-8 years thus far, and I currently have a Telstra service for landline. What would be my best option, as I do not exactly understand many things about broadband, naked DSL or even phone line rental.

Thank you in advance for helping me out!

  • Hi,

I have used IINET naked adsl2 now for a bit over 5 years and would never go back to a fixed line service.

For $59.95 a month I get unlimited local and std calls, plus 100Gb of data at breakneck speeds.

Could not be happier but their VOIP phone could be more user friendly for dorks like me.

I find their customer service to generally be based in South Africa or local and they can English and not keep apologising endlessly without actually doing anything.

Lately their customer service response time has been longer but that is to be expected from someone expanding at that rate.

    Hope this is of help.

I doubt you want to know how the technology works, but in layman's terms, naked DSL takes out phone line rental and you aren't able to use that phone line for standard calls through the PSTN network anymore. 'Naked' refers to the lack of a PSTN phone account.
If you want to make phone calls, it's through VOIP (voice over IP). Simply put, it's using your internet account to make phone calls, so if your internet has an outage, so does your phone line.

In my case I was paying about $50 for an ADSL 2+ account (50gb on peak, 50gb off peak) PLUS the 22.95 Telstra land line rental, which was never used for anything other than to provide a phone line for the ADSL2+.
Now, I went to Naked ADSL2+ and pay $70 for unlimited internet data.
The upside is obviously more data and no phone line rental, the downside is that when the zombie apocalypse comes and they take out mobile phone towers I won't have a backup phone line.
