SEEK website overly successful

Today I read that SEEK is spending a tonne of money (http://www.skynews.com.au/businessnews/article.aspx?id=95150…). Apparently their recent success is from their new focus on educational and international stuff.

Does anyone else feel that the amount of money they've made for what they actually do ridiculous though. For those that don't know their pricing structure - this is how much they charge. https://talent.seek.com.au/Support/OurProducts

Although I'm sure their server backend would be sophisticated these days (despite their front end being very out of date until last year), it's amazing that a company is charging so much for a digitised version of what's been around forever.

I personally find the whole human resources industry an unnecessary hurdle in the 21st century (I could write a book on the stupid things I've been asked about my specialty - when I ignorantly thought they're meant to be knowledgeable enough to judge and hire me) and I believe companies relying on SEEK as a trusted medium is stopping the little guys from spending $300 on advertising.

So rant over, does anyone know what service SEEK provides for $300 that I'm just not getting?

  • same as ebay, realestate.com.au, carsales.com.au - a platform/marketplace :)

  • I just wish they'd actually remove posts (and preferably punish advertisers) that are NOT for the location they are filed under. Queensland is NOT Melbourne!

I share your dislike or HR and find that the agencies are the biggest problem rather than seek.

  • Yeah, most of my bitterness is actually towards the whole HR influence on the workplace (SEEK is just their facilitator).

I find today's HR processes quite cold and indirectly responsible for a lot of workplace dissatisfaction. I like applying for work directly with the person I'll be working for - these have by far been the best jobs I've had. I have a strong disdain for formal performance reviews, especially when one is part of a larger corporation where they feel it's the only way to assign your bonus. I was annoyed when I discovered an HR person I've never met would be deciding my performance bonus - the same person whose greatest contribution to the organisation was identifying resume keywords, since that person had no actual knowledge of our field.

A lot of HR companies have more than one name and I have embarrassingly applied to register with the same agency I'd already registered with. Apparently, "award-wining" Adecco doesn't even take phone calls for work from registered workers anymore - you have to do everything on-line and hope for the best. And don't get me started on Centrelink's contracted job centres…
