Travel/Carryon Backpack

Hey guys, going to asia for a few weeks and will be backpacking. Wondering what a decent backpack would be which would still be allowed to be carried through carryon. Not sure exactly what to look for apart frmo it being waterproof. Will a simple bag from rebel do?

Cheers

  • I think the TLS Motherlode stuff from ebags is the best. They have models that are quite huge but still fit onto carryon, such as the weekender. Their TLS series is brilliant, but unfortunately, it won't get to you on time. Good to consider for the future.

This was my carry-on only bag going to SE asia for 5.5 months. It was about $95 delivered. As it happened it spent the last three months lashed to the tiny luggage rack of a POS motorcycle. In retrospect I'd make sure whatever I get is ridiculously strong, and comfortable to carry on treks in humid 35 degree weather. A small top-loader is easier to carry (better balanced and lighter), but something like the Monashee makes accessing everything very easy (though multiple sections add weight, and the fact that it expands away from your spine puts greater strain on your spine).

If it's something you're planning to do trekking with, make sure you get a hip belt - it will save your back by moving the weight of the backpack to your hips. You also want the heavy items to be packed as close to your spine as possible; it greatly reduces the strain on your back and makes the load MUCH easier to carry. One of the features I really appreciated in the Monashee were the stash pockets on the hip belt. Never used the hydration pack pocket, but it could also be useful.

Sorry for the rant, honestly didn't mean to write so much!
