Aldi Stirling 190L Upright Freezer

In the market for a new upright freezer, and this one popped up. Any idea if it's good value?

  • It's very good value. I have the small one, wish I had waited for this one. The stores will sell out early on the day, so you'll need to be there at/just after opening time.

  • i assume it is not frost-free. where does all the water go when you need to defrost it? on to the floor?

  • In terms of energy usage it is a guzzler. You get 190litres but it uses 391 KwH per year. That's over 2 KwH per year per litre. An efficient upright freezer will use between 1 and 1.5 KwH per year per litre. They cost a lot more to purchase but I would think you could do better than that. My 510 Litre fridge freezer only uses about 20 more KwH per year than this item!

Update - the Stirling website says 390 KwH per year but the Aldi ad says 334. I suspect the former is more correct, but I can't be sure.
Also just to add, chest freezers are always more efficient (around 20% or so). I'd be more interested in the 150 litre chest freezer, which has a more reasonable efficiency rating.

Crappy energy rating aside - if it isn't frost-free, don't buy it.

I clicked on your username. If you were alot farther inland than Brisbane, where humidity is generally much lower - maybe - but buying a cyclic upright freezer was a silly mistake we made.

Compared to a chest freezer, where you just open up a plug after defrosting and drain into a container (and where you can speed up the whole process by using warm water), upright cyclics are a pain in the arse.
