Hello007 would buy 4 if he saw this.

Don't want to be a snob, but can't justify spending $100+ on a blended scotch. If you're spending that much get a decent single malt. There's not much different between Johnnie Black and Johnnie Blue. But each to their own.

    • +1

Just because you cannot tell difference, doesn't mean there isn't one. There's actually a very significant difference with these two. "But each to their own".

      • +3

There is a significant difference between the two for sure!!! But al-chysim is right. Unless you have a particular love for JW Blue, this is a waste IMHO. Its like buying a very expensive pair of brand name shoes which use glue and cheap rubber for construction. Or buying a very expensive quartz watch.

Anyone who is new to whiskey and wants to get into it, I'd suggest looking through this list and getting what you can afford - http://www.maltmadness.com/malt-whisky/best-whisky.html

From the above list, there are probably about 8 whiskeys there that are under $100 that all rate above 90.

        :)

EDIT: Also not down-noting the OP's post. This is still a very good price for JW Blue!!!

        • Delicious list.

        • Actually, he did not assume you have a particular love - he stated that in his opinion, you must have a love for the product in order for it to be worth it. He does not know whether you have bought it. He is not assuming anything. Merely stating the conditions whereby he perceives value.

And politely so, might I add.

        • I have seen that website and list before… and when I was at duty free I couldn't find one single malt on that list at the store. Are these single malt typically limited releases? Which one scoring above 90 could easily be found at a liquor store? I'm hanging out to try some quality single malt stuff.
          Cheers!

        • Unfortunately a lot of the whiskeys in that list are hard to find. But IMHO this is half the fun in perusing an interest in whiskey (that is, tracking down a bottle).

I would suggest either looking online for a retailer that sells a particular bottle you like the look of, or perhaps dropping into http://www.whiskyandale.com.au/ for either a quiet tipple, or get them to track it down for you.

Two of my favorites that are not on that list (in order of preference):
          http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_382972/talisker-distille…

          http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_345520/talisker-18-year-…

(yes I am a talisker fan)

EDIT: I have bought dalmore before from that list which was nice. The trusty Talisker 10yo is always worth buying. Highland park is also a decent drop (not on the list). A few drops of water generally brings out flavors too, so try that in your glass. Laphroaig 10 is also one that rates well, but it is VERY smokey.

      • Agree, bought a bottle couple years back @ $160, gave me a headache like most blends… wasn't bad, but still devoid of that nice single malt goodness like a bottle of Balvenie http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_732640/the-balvenie-sing…

    • You clearly haven't tried Hibiki 17.

    • Agree. There are so many subjectively better whiskies than this at lower price. As a bargain it is a good price though.

if you want to spend this much on blended scotch, pick up some Ballantynes 17 YO for $80-90
much better scotch - won awards for best whisky in the world a few years ago

  • Vintage cellars has the 1 lt for $199.99

Best price I have seen around for the 700 ml in recent months ,thanks

  • Arguments for and against blended whiskey, as there is blended wines… good batches, bad batches, all distinct. Blends help with continuity…

Not all single malts are of my liking… some are more peaty/smokey, some are lighter and sharper… it's all down to taste.

This is delivered, not me worrying about dropping it on the way home from the shop as I get out of the car etc… nice price for a relatively popular scotch.

Personally, single malt 18 YO (30 year Glenfiddich is awesome, just can't afford another mortgage) is great, but as a mixer, no way.

This is even cheaper than duty free prices !

    DutyFree Offering
    $175 for 750ml, $233/1L
    $235 for 1L (1000ml). $235/1L

    This Deal offering
    $149.39 for 700ml, $213.29/1L

    • That wouldn't be hard….Duty Free has been a rip off for years!

  • is this store dependent??
my loacl store is Brighton and the price is $158.60 plus delivery = $165.60
still ok price if you can wait 7 days for delicvery
but i agree with most posters would prefer a single like Glendroinach 18yo at around $150 mark
