    $0 joining fee

They all offer that, if they don't just ask and they will…

Also, their fees look quite expensive compared to other 24/7 gyms…

I think I was paying around $10/wk with no joining fee at Snap fitness last year… No contract, no exit fees.

      How are your abs, jv?

      • +2

Talking about abs… I joined a gym too. My abs have all decided to revolt against me and now morphed into one.

        • +3

why have a 6 pack when you can have a slab?

      • +3

        How are your abs, jv?

        I've now got a 12-pack

    • The Snap fitness next to me is $17.95… (Sydney city)

      • Same here i thought same rate at all Snap fitness think mine is $16.95 a week though. JV can you confirm $10 week might try to get my local Snap to match if possible.

  • +6

Yeah…gym contract was a huge mistake for me.

I typically despise all contracts for services, for some reason I made this an exception which was silly. Fooled myself into thinking if I was locked into it, it'd encourage me to go. Instead I just lost interest and now feel like an idiot for throwing my money away each month.

It's pretty unfair really, they make such easy money this way :(

get up and go man, you can do it if you want to

      • Yeah, I know, but it's not purely a laziness thing. It's more that I find more enjoyment in other forms of exercise. So I'd much rather spend my time getting fit with friends by playing squash or doing a boxing class for example.

Obviously with a gym you can tailor your routine to suit your goals, but after a while this wasn't important to me anymore. I'm not worried about being 'buff' or anything like that, I just want to improve my fitness. And the gym just wasn't that interesting to me, which is rather unfortunate.

yep as JV mentioned, it should be easily waived any time. Don't fall for their tricks. Joining fees don't mean anything.

  • +5

You should also note that there is no way around the non-refundable $60 charge for the key fob that allows access 24/7.

    • +1

Yeah that's a big cop out as well. They offer refunds to trial members but charge full-time users. What. How is that piece of plastic worth more than $5 anyway.

    • Correct, aka the "administration fee".

The joining fee = bargain buffer.

Administration fee = minimum cost to induct a new member.

  • I don't get why is it so bad? Would someone explain as I am currently deciding on joining.

If you can't read the other comments, I'll summarise them for you

      a) it's cheaper elsewhere
      b) don't pay more than weekly or monthly (or you'll be wasting your money with non-attendance)
      c) joining fees are generally waived elsewhere
      d) the keyfob is stupidly expensive and non refundable

      • +2

That's not how I would advise someone how to choose a gym. Newbies should always choose the gym closest to home. A gym within 4 blocks is motivating. A gym further away requires motivation. Then consider money. And negotiate to waive fees saying you think you have a corporate discount at the other nearby gym etc.

        • -1

          I'm no newbie buddy.

        • Comment was to the post generally. Gym newbie. Once you use gyms, you know what you need from them. And it ain't always price.

      • a) Unfortunately there's no 24x7 gym's in the heart of the CBD (or at least next to my work) and near my home.

        b) Paying yearly for a gym membership is typical, that's how they make money.

        c) Yes, they are.

        d) You're not paying for a keyfob, you're paying to join the gym, see your point c.

I joined Anytime Fitness probably close to 2 years ago (South Australia). $0 joining fee at $9.95/month plus $20 for Key to enter gym. Paying any more than this, they are ripping you off. It is a franchise after all, individual owners will try to milk as much money out of you as possible.

    • +6

      $9.95 per month? That's incredible!

    • +4

Surely you mean $9.95 a week?

  • Even as a non-member I was once hassled and annoyed until they finally gave up. I'd hate to see what would happen if I joined and then decided to cancel.

    Oh, and above comments too.

Joined Crunch Gym, Liverpool a while ago and it was very good. A bit too busy for their capacity at peak times (i.e. could barely walk around) but heaps of good equipment and very cheap.

  • Member of fitnfast here, I pay $8.95 per week contracted for twelve months, but not many people know that Anytime has a much larger dumbbell capacity if you need such, I believe up to 50kgs. Something to consider! I personally need more than the 30kg max at FitnFast and as such am changing

    • Where's your fit n fast? The ones close to me are $16.95 a week :(

  • I tried ANYTIME FITNESS for a week trial at Labrador. Staff was not helpful at all… Yes I still swipe card paid $20 two years ago.
