We are going to Canberra with a friend of ours early March.
On the way there we get a free ride and now we are looking for some cheap way to get back to Brisbane.
Both Qantas and Virgin are very expensive.
Do you have any other suggestions?

I thought about that myself but it probably adds up to more than $100, doesn't it?
What price were you hoping for?
Say, for example, Jetstar and Tiger Air have great sales for other routes eg Sydney-Brisbane under $50.
But they don't operate between Canberra and Brisbane, unfortunately.
I am hoping to find something under $100, if not $50.$100 rarely happens for Melb/Sydney let alone elsewhere. $50 hasn't happened since Tiger got grounded and never came back.
Maybe try camper-van relocation hire https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130093
That site doesn't do Canberra so you'd still need to get to Sydney
You could hitch hike. Watch wolf creek 2 for tips.
Flights from/to Canberra are always expensive and especially so since it dropped down to two carriers.
Apart from the already mentioned bus to Sydney option, you might find a cheaper flight if you can fly outside the start and finish of a federal parliamentary sitting (ie. Not Sunday, Monday or Thursdays).
I've seen the cheapest CBR-MEL flight at $1048 when the buses were cancelled by floods and the parliament was sitting… I've been to Malaysia and stayed a few nights in a hotel for less than that. Glad I caught a lift to SYD and bought a $115 fare on the night.
Seems like I have to settle with Virgin then.

Flying in and out of Canberra is expensive.
Depends on if you want to get to Brisbane fast or cheaply. You can't have both and it depends on how you value your time.
Greyhound Bus between Sydney and Canberra $21 Each Way
