Pool chemicals

They seem to be quite a bit. Where would you suggest someone buy acid, chlorine and alkalinity

  • Are you talking about liquid chlorine or tablets? Cheap at Bunnings but rubbish stuff. With Chlorine (like many things) you get what you pay for.

With liquid chlorine at least, it should be stored it in a dark, cool spot. Don't buy from anyone who stores it on pallets out in the sun.

Liquid chlorine from my local pool shop is $1/litre. Not sure how that compares. You might be able to negotiate a discount by buying in bulk or online then store it under the house or in the garage until you need it. Just make sure you separate your chlorine and acid. You don't want them sitting together.

At the end of the day, running a pool costs money and you generally get what you pay for. So I reckon just spend the money and enjoy your pool. :)

  • Liquid Chlorine, is best from Bunnings, with an exchange 15 litre costing $10

Acid and Alkalinity off set each other, so should only be needed rarely in case something gets out of balance

  • I use to work at a pool shop testing pool water and advising on what chemicals to use to balance your pool water. I'm definitely biased but I wouldn't buy your pool chemicals from Bunnings ever (maybe only salt).

Zodiac and PQ sell a range of pool chemicals including Totaly Alkalinity Increaser, Calcium Hardness, Acid, Dry Acid, etc. I use these brands myself so I would recommend them. Also if you want to stop algae coming back, definitely use a 500mL bottle of Hotzone Algaecide per 50,000 litres. That is one strong Algaecide. Your local pool shop should offer similar quality chemicals. And sprinkling Stablised Chlorine is great for burning out algae stains (of course do not do this if you have a vinyl pool).

    • Never buy Salt from bunnings. Bug pieces hard to disolve

  • Zodiac website does no have prices.

I have a feeling that the pool shop[ near me is a rip off.

So I brought from Big W a large lot of Chlorine at a reasonable price in a 40 KG container. That will last me some time.

It was suggested to me that muriatic acid from a paint shop is fine.

    Alkalinity I have no idea.
