Reliable HD TV

My 42" Philips plasma has just carked - light switches on for a few seconds then immediately powers off. Could be power supply and/or capacitor failures from what I've found out. Wife turning the power off without turning off the TV may have been a catalyst.

Unlikely I'll be spending big $$$ to have it fixed so I'm now looking for a good quality, RELIABLE replacement LCD HD TV. I'll probably go for a slightly smaller size this time so that when the new one inevitably fails it won't be as traumatic to the pocket. Anybody care to recommend particular brands to look at or avoid based on their experiences and knowledge?

  • what is your budget and any requirements/details?

    • A 2D HD TV with the usual array of HDMI and USB, $800-1K, up to 42" max, quality brand with good warranty. Thanks. I've read around the web just want to get ideas and hear actual experiences good and bad.

      • If you read the conditions of the Aust Consumer Law regarding tvs you will find that you are better off with that than a manufacturers warranty.
With ACL you have the option of replace, repair or refund and it is your choice.
Go to the ACCC web site and d/l the pdf. It is concise and clearly written.
Most retailers will have a copy to give you also.

        • Thanks for your comment. I know about statutory warranty. Not as straightforward as written warranty but just as enforceable if you're persistent. Should have clarified - by good warranty I meant companies which actually back their products rather than give consumers the run around.

        • … and that is the problem… a company that wont give you the run around. Is there any today? I know some people have had decent service but in general it is always made un-necessarily painful.

The big benefit of ACL over the product warranty is that "Y O U" have the choice of how the situation is fixed, ie: replace, repair or refund. With a product warranty they can replace the faulty product with another returned and repaired unit that may not be in a condition to your satisfaction.

  • Recently had my second 42" Panasonic plasma fail and will be in the market for a new one if this one gets written off.
Lucky our main tv, a 5 y/o LG SD 42" LCD is 100% reliable and better to watch fta tv than both the plasmas were.

Like you I don't want to go to anything larger than 42" and have been considering these… seems a lot of TV for the $…(incl delivery) and everything LG has been very good for us.

Don't get a dick smith brand TV! Had more than a few problems for a GE6606 and I've been told to update the firmware for which there is none. Not even a reference site that says it doens't have firmware.

    • DSE TVs… 13 month wonders :-)

  • Just saw the Costco warranty comment - supposed "lifetime" guarantee, and I did read on here I think that someone had an old fridge(?) replaced by a new equivalent, no qns asked. Did wonder though. How long has Costco operated in this country? Not long enough to test their claim of "lifetime" I'd suggest. Anyone know what their definition of "lifetime" actually is? Can't see anything on their website.

    • A lifetime warranty on flat panel TV's, especially plasmas, would be a recipe for disaster seeing most of the popular brands these days do not get past a few years before they Bjork.

      • Precisely, well maybe a bit longer but the point is still valid. Costco USA has a replacement policy on certain items, maybe most, but Costco Australia is very quiet on their website about warranty which makes me more than sceptical.

  • I have 2 46 inch tvs and neither has skipped a beat - a Sony LCD and a Sansung LED LCD. Highly recommend either brand.

Not sure about downsizing, but having a quick look on JB your budget gets you a high end 40". Aim to knock off abt 15% off a ticket price without too much trouble on one of these (maybe closer to 10% on a sony)

Make sure you get one with 100hz refresh - any lower will look choppy for fast moving action.

I wouldn't go for LG or Panasonic too many warranty claims in my tv salesman days some years ago but maybe they've lifted their game. Steer clear from the no names with your budget you don't need to go there.

Check the standard warranty for the tv at the shop - some have 2 yrs standard which is plenty. If you have a points credit card they sometimes include an extra year warranty. If something is going to go wrong it's generally in first 12 mths.

    • "I wouldn't go for LG"
LG is the only brand of electronics that I have had a good run from.
Sammys and Pannys have all proven to be a failure for me, repeatedly.
      As for Sony… pass..
