HELP! Cheap Comprehensive Car Insurance Needed

So Im looking for some cheap comprehensive car insurance for my $4000 car. Last time I got insurance which was on a $3500 car it was with QBE and I paid $400 for a year. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good insurance place that might be able to better that approximate. Dont do a lot of kms and only want it for one driver and am 30+. If anyone has any advice itd be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! :)

EDIT: Also when I go onto the Youi website it talks about a promotional code. Does anyone know of a promotional code for Youi? Thanks :)

Budget direct is offering 20% off.
    http://budgetdirect.com.au/

    • Thanks, just got a quote with them though and they quoted $895 a year for comprehensive, that was with the same $600 excess as QBE. If I changed the excess to $800 it brought it down to $800 a year. Thanks so much for the suggestion but it looks like QBE may still be cheaper. Thank you though :)

EDIT: Ok just checked what the quote would be with an excess of $1100 and it quoted me $712, still a little too high, thanks again though :)

    Coles Car Insurance.

Ask them for quotes with a $1600 excess. We got ours down to $250 on a car we paid $500 for! (Camry 92)

Yes a crash will be financially painful.

But comprehensive insurance buffers you from having to pay for the
Mercedes, BMW or Lamborghini you may hit.

    • Ok just did it with a $1600 excess and it quoted me $835 comprehensive for a year.

Also have just got a re-quote with QBE and have been quoted $1532.70 with $600 excess or $1150.20 with $1600 excess. When I was quoted the $400 before I had a perfect rating and hadnt had an accident/claim in years, so I guess cos of my accident with the last car its ruined my rating, hence sky rocket prices.

      So so far:

      Budget Direct = $712 a year/$1100 excess
      Coles = $835 a year/$1600 excess
New QBE quote taking into account accident with last car = $1150.20/$1600 excess

I'd look at budget direct, bingle and progressive online. Coles could be worth a look, but I never found it that great. Youi was painful - a 30 minute phone call, hard sell, and even then they were way off the mark.

    • Ok got a quote from Bingle $642.51 for a year with $600 excess. Seems like the best so far. Will keep getting quotes though and see how I go. Thanks so much for your input etc.

Also if anyone else has any more advice/info itd be really appreciated. Thanks so much :)

    What car are you running?
Going from your post, I'd say Woolworths, because if you dont drive much, they have a discount for low KMs driven.
Progressive would be almost on par with bingle, but easier to claim with.
If you have one of those sporty, less common cars, the JustCar would be cheaper.

    • Thanks cpho. Looked at getting a quote with Woolworths online but because I bought the car over 30 days ago they want me to ring them. I might give them a call tomorrow and see what sort of prices they can offer. I dont drive it that much so as youve said maybe I could get it a bit cheaper because of that. All these quotes are so expensive just because its only a $4000 car, but then if I hit a Mercedes or something (touch my wood laminate desk) thats where the trouble starts. So had better get some type of insurance on it. Thanks very much for your help and will ring Woolies and maybe do some more online quotes n see how I do. Thanks heaps :)

Consider just getting 3rd party property damage. My car has depreciated to a point where I do not comprehensively insure it anymore. It is worth about the same as yours. If I cause an accident, I have 3rd party property so the other car gets repaired and I will most likely go get another one. This insurance is a little over $200 a year for me.

$200 is very low, who are you with?
But I agree with the sentiment. If you are considering $1600 excess and a $700 premium you only have to go without a crash a few years to be in front.

        Allianz with a $650 excess

    • Just did a quote with Allianz for third party and was quoted $382.73 with $750 excess, not quite your really good quote of $200 but better than comprehensive prices. Thanks very much for your help though but I might still keep looking and see how much lower I can get it. Thank you :)

I am with progressive. Cheapest in the market.
Dunno what they are like after an accident though…. Thankfully

I got a 1989 MX5 and with GIO, it costs $195 3rd party…This covers me for damages to others but not my own car. given that my car is worth about $7k, I still think that this is the cheaper option versus comprehensive. I also rarely drive it…

So for your own situation, I suggest you take your circumstances into account and ask yourself, is your $4k car really worth fixing when an accident occurs? Personally, after a smash, your car would "never" be like what it was b4 the smash. Cars these days are designed really well with energy absorption and crumple zones. Any smash involving damage to these areas would put a strain on the rest of the car's chassis, regardless of how well the damage was fixed. I hope I am making sense.

    my 2 cents.

Remember that a repairable car has some value after a smash, so it isn't like your $4000 automatically becomes zero. Even for parts it would be worth hundreds.

    • Thanks all you guys for your help. I just got a quote on third party with GIO and theyve quoted $290.37 with $650 excess. Have I made a claim within the last 3 years, yep, its killing me, not quite the $195 you got quoted but better than the comprehensive prices I guess :(

I buy and sell cars quite often, for anything under $5k I just take out a basic third party property policy with OnePath, usually costs me about $16 a month (24 year old male living in adelaide).

once you pay your premium and excess on comprehensive you have usually already forked out ~$1200, which is more than a quarter of the value of your car, so it doesn't make much sense to get the full-fat insurance to me.

    • Ok One Path have quoted $208.10 with $600 excess for their third party, this ones been the cheapest so far. Thanks very much for suggesting them. Will keep looking and getting quotes but will go with these guys if I cant better this. Thanks very much for your help :)
