Travel insurance

Hi, just need some advice on travel insurance. We are going on a cruise to Bali this year and need a good ,reliable insurance company. There are so many with different levels of cover & excess. I am confused and need your help and advice please.

  • I have previously used Southern Cross Travel Insurance and they were pretty good with claiming on my lost mobile while in New York. A bit of back and forth was required (they required a same day police report plus detailed narrative, proof of purchase, credit card statements etc) but the amount I got back in the end was very fair.

In fact, because I had bought the lost phone at Australian prices and I bought my new phone in America before heading home (at cheaper American prices), I ended up trading up my mobile for less than $100 after the claim! Well worth it in the end (if you don't count the massive anxiety that accompanies losing your mobile travelling!).

  • What do you hope to cover?
When we travel, we buy tickets with our gold credit card which has free insurance.
My belief is this will be adequate cover for medical problems or other 'big' issues, but it doesn't offer much for littler problems like delayed flights, lost baggage etc, as the excess is $250.
In my experience, the hassle of claiming less than several hundred isn't worth it, as you need police reports etc.
