Sony Blu-Ray Player BDP-S1100 $68 at The Good Guys

120

A nice saving on a blu-ray player compared to some of the other big-name stores. Might be worth a buy if chasing one? Oddly, BigW have a price bigger than the RRP Sony recommends on their site. Stale website? Anyway, you seem to be saving about 10 bucks here over the nearest similar store. Not bad for a low-priced item.

  • Do these do ABC iView, I don't seem to be able to find a conclusive opinion.

I can tell you the BDPS-5100 does, so assuming that the inbuilt UI is the same, yes it probably does.

    • They definitely do. :)

    • That's a nice find with coupon. Good option to have.

    • You legend!
      Ordered one.

I have one of these. It is "fast". That is to say, it loads discs very quickly, which is a welcome change from my other super-sluggish Samsung. The remote can be programmed to control your tv (many brands supported). The remote has strong reception. The unit in general works well, but if you pause a DVD, then it sometimes has issues playing later (buffer underrun or something). I think that's a known issue.
This unit is not flat on top, so you cannot easily put something else on top of it.

  • Without 3D Blu-ray support, I wouldn't recommend it. You may not yet have a 3D TV, but your next TV will most likely have 3D. There are some fairly impressive 3D Blu-ray movies about.

    • Yeah, If you have a TV which supports 3D, then there's no point buying a BR player which doesn't support 3D.
but people who buy 3D TVs buy a 3D supported BR player along with the TV, otherwise how they can test their TV :)

I personally think 3D is one of those love it or hate it technologies and for a lot of people just isn't that must have feature.

The lack of onboard Wi-Fi and only one USB port is the killer. Sure it has an ethernet port but cabling can be an expensive headache and having to swap devices all the time isn't great either.

Still, it's an excellent player at that price.

Not only do some people not care about 3d, some don't care about bluray (me included for both). I got my bdp-s790 purely to make my TV smarter, and I am yet to play or own a bluray disc despite using it daily. Between i-view, sbs on demand, crackle, f2air, and YouTube, I have plenty to watch. Plays my foreign films too (mkv, mp4, avi) and my old DVD collection

  • I'm guessing Region 4 only for DVD?

    • +2

Nope. It's a region-free player so you won't have any issues playing discs sourced elsewhere in the world.

      • +2

        Yes, can confirm it's region-free

        • Thanks guys.

      • Any chance it's region free for blu-ray? That would be fantastic!

  • Any chance it's region free for blu-ray?

    No chance.

You need a hardware mod for that.

  • I got mine.

It's a nice little unit with good USB support (better interface and USB features than my ye olde budget TV). Nice remote look & feel (to my hands). 8.8W rated power consumption should be a far better choice than getting your PS3 to play Blu-Rays (power hog).

These units have been simpliified a lot since the VCR days. I could do without the front-face gloss but apparently the manufacturers are still insisting on this…

    • The glossy plastic seems to attract dust and fibres.
I'm thinking, craft or $2 shop - thin black urethane. Cut to size, stick it on.

      Cheaper options:
      -sanding block
      -gaffer tape
