+1 to books from local library, and cheap books at garage sales, and spending time with your children to teach them to read.
However for those parents who struggle with reading/writing themselves (and there are plenty) this service may be useful.
Be careful though, it's associated with the ABC, you may suffer the wrath of Mr Abbott for going near it.

Isn't he a Rogue Scholar?
I agree whole heartedly that spending time with your children teaching them to read is the priority. But I don't see any problem with providing children with additional teaching methods. Once they get the hang of it, you don't need to spend much time supervising. Obviously, it's better if you can, but it's a big advantage.
The biggest benefit is for kids who are learning to read, not those who need to read more.

Fantastic program well worth the subscription post the free trial. My kids love the lessons and see it as a game. It's been a fantastic addition to the time we spend reading with them and our eldest won the literacy award at school. The youngest only starts this year, so we'll see if it's done as much for her.
my kids subscription expired and i used this code to get a free month yay
We found 'books' work just as well, and they are free at your local library… :)
