Alternatively you can also get them from the ACCC:

    • +5

Thanks J2. If you don't mind, I'll update the title and include your link. Cheers.

      • Sorry, technically a dupe!
But always good to remind people!

        • +1

Ye, I was worried about that, but I asked the mods and they reckon there's a 6 month rule now, so all good.

        • +1

That's why I didn't hit report. Over a year ago now, and like I said "good reminder!"

    • thanks !!

    • +12

      I love the logic here:

The only reason Origin are giving these away is because they don't want other electrical companies to come knocking on your door and offer you a better deal lol

  • +1

I still have one up on the door from the old ACCC post. Starting to fade a bit though so it may be time for a new one.

  • Never received mine when I signed up previously.

  • +3

These actually seem to work to some degree.
I have seen salepeoples approach with clipboards etc and gone into "here we go" bullshit rejecting mode only to have them notice it as they got close to the door and leave.
Kind of left me deflated on some occasions, getting all ready to explain how no combination of words they say can make me part with any money or sign anything.

    • They do thankfully. I've only had one guy in the last ~17 months game enough to ignore it and knock anyway.

      • +2

If they knock and ignore the sign, you can take down their name & supplier and report them to the ACCC.. It's illegal and they can be punished harshly..

    • Doesn't work at my place.
People selling things ignore the sticker & then argue it does not apply to them (how could you NOT want my wonderful offer/product).
And I have seen people we do want to knock & come in hesitate when they see the sticker.
Has proved useless over the last few years.

      • Like people delivering parcels?

Yeah, same! Never had arseholes knock though - at least not ones who initially SAW the sticker.

  • +1

I have a problem of Jehovahs in the area. SO MANY DOORKNOCKING! SO we have a No Salespeople + Handwritten NO JEHOVAH WITNESSES ON THIS PROPERTY. Thanks OP, old one a bit faded :)

    • +2

Simplest way with Jehovas, is just tell them you are Jewish.
They seem to know not to try after that and are reasonably pleasant and leave quickly.

      • +7

Or you could just say, "I'm not interested, thank you", and close the door.

        • +4

I find the religious ones can be a bit tricky as they often come over as very nice but below the niceness is a dogged persistence. Lots of smiles we can come back later if you like etc. So obviously I am talking about the persistent "wont take no for an answer" types and I find it harder to just tell them to rack off. Sometimes they even come with their poor kids all dressed up too- makes it much worse.

        • Generally I find telling them I dont push my beliefs on them, so they should not on me, seems to work fine too. I am a scary looking dude though. Maybe they want to leave anyway.

        • +1

Is it really offensive being well dressed? Are tracksuit pants better?

        • -2

          Lol. What a strange statement.

      • Will it work if I am Asian?

        • Yes absolutely but to make it convincing ask for any available freebies and try to sell HIM something before he leaves.
          Kidding…
Just tell them you're with Falun Gong.

    • +4

don't forget to put a 'please' in there..manners go a long way.

      • +6

        Whoah there.

They knock on peoples doors uninvited and unannounced, trying to push their views and opinions on their victims.

I find that pretty bloody rude - no need for manners in return.

        • +2

Its when they bring the kids - sorta forces the "nice" even if its cruel and weird of them to do it.

        • +6

they are just trying to make a living. the real evil are the corporations that want to bleed ur every cent…
ps: in relation to Jehovah's Witness, they believe that they are pointing u in the right path to eternal life, and are doing you a big favor. They are not trying to sell u drugs, right? Just be polite and tell them to put you in the "ignore" list.

        • +2

They knock on doors because they believe in what they are doing or they're trying to make a living. They are a human being too. If they are obnoxious and refuse to leave, sure, you are within your rights to make your dissatisfaction felt. But is it really to hard to exercise some human decency in asking them to leave?

        • +2

I dont see anyone suggest you shouldn't be decent in your dealings with them. Mostly I am trying to take the shortest reasonable pathway to get rid of them in a nice way. But lets be clear here - many of these people are quite consciously attempting to deceive or bullshit the householder for money. Some of the crap I have heard from the electricity ones could sound convincing to a new immigrant or oldie. Some of them act aggressive and pushy, some outright lie, like the old "art student" routine. So no, they dont deserve any special regard because they are "making a living" especially if they are liars. They choose a job where they bullshit, interrupt and annoy people, they cop what goes with it. Same as parking inspectors. No point acting all surprised when they a get a bad reaction.
I suppose the best you could say is "they have a job" and some degree of motivation. Better than sitting around bludging.

        • +1

          I agree thoroughly!
The amount of times the utility people come to the door telling me that they can give me a better price, I ask them what the price is? Never once have they given me a straight answer! It's usually "Well can I see your last bill?" My answer is a flat out "NO! Give me your best price and I'll tell you if I want to change!" The other thing they always ask for is your NMI. I always ask them if they are from my supplier why don't they already have these details? Like KT says, they are lying cheating mongrels. And the reason they ask for this information is because it's illegal for them to touch your meter box as they're not employed by the supplier at all!

    • +5

I actually like the Jehovahs calling, they are friendly - if it's not convenient they go away. I hear that if you really don't want them they will put you on their own not to call 'list' but they have rightly said they aren't selling anything and those stickers don't apply to them…

    • +8

I'm actually thankful for the Jehovahs in my area as they disturbed someone burglarising my house once. They act like a surrogate neighborhood watch. Regardless, I've since installed 2m high fencing and a remote controlled gate…no one gets through that and good luck to any burglar trying to hoist an 160kg safe over that fence.

    • +1

I have a problem of Jehovahs in the area. SO MANY DOORKNOCKING!

Answer the door naked, preferably with an erection…they won't be back in a hurry! :p

      • +1

Just out of curiosity… I wonder if that's illegal? I mean you're on your on property and they're coming over unexpected

        • +1

Based on that logic, its OK to expose yourself to guests in your house? Of course its not. You are answering the door. There is an expectation that someone is there. People have a right to enter your property and take the shortest purposed route to the front door, and knock.

        • in queensland it's illegal. you are knowingly exposing yourself.

        • Believe there's a difference between "in a sexual manner", a lifestyle choice, getting caught out of the shower etc.

        • Overheard a volunteer collector discussing an older couple he had called on in West End, Brissie. They said they were nudists, came to the door naked and she bent over to get the change… I think they enjoyed themselves ;-)

I've certainly been greeted at the door by naked people in Queensland. Never bothered me.

I have greeted religious zealots while stirring my drink with a vibrator - they never returned!

        • +1

Based on that logic, its OK to expose yourself to guests in your house? Of course its not.

          That's for a court to decide… ;)

      • +2

Answer the door naked, preferably with an erection

My wife tried this, and they ran!

  • +5

Legally they can ignore the Origin stickers but not the ACCC stickers.. Keep that in mind.

  • +6

The electricity salespeople are the worst.

Seems Ironic they THEY are the ones giving out the stickers?

    • +5

Yep some definite bastards amongst that lot.
I have had some really aggressive little smart-ass lie to me outright or attempt to - some ridiculous crap about being 'from the government' to check my plan. I nearly laughed at his nerve. Annoyed me for the rest of the afternoon though, kept thinking of different ways of putting him away.
      What a horrible little rotter.

    • +2

Seems likely Origin has a larger chunk of the market already. They know they can only lose customers by these door to door sales tactics.

They want to shut the door on it.

  • +4

thanks origin for the free sticker. huh, what's that? you're putting electricity prices up again!!! but I get a free sticker? I guess that makes it all better.

  • How about a 'do not call' haha

    • Great idea… Maybe try here

      • +1

Put the "And don't call either" sticker on the back of your front gate so they can read it on the way back out ;)

  • Mmmmm, so many jokes but what one can I choose… Any suggestions?

  • I got this sticker with my bill last week.

    • Likewise, I thought maybe that's why it appeared on here again now!

  • I ordered one of these from Origin last year and it never arrived. Maybe since they don't have any business in WA they didn't want to send me a sticker. Stingy!

    • +1

      Grab an ACCC one.

  • +2

I like that the ACCC ones have the official gov logo - looks more serious :)

  • Thanks for the reminder!

  • +1

I wish it applies for political and charity doorknockers too (the latter of which is hard to say no to). I give donations here and there, but I don't like to be interrupted in my home.

    • +1

it definitely should - I always turn away anyone at my door. To hard to tell whether its a scam

      • Yep. "Sorry, I only donate online."

  • still waiting for legal firms to start making these (in a more threatening tone, listing all breaches of australian law, and the fines/penalties/consequences)

  • -1

    I got one last time…

These things DO NOT WORK !!!

It's still in new condition sitting here on my desk but the salespeople still come around… >:(

    • +4

its a sticker. it wont work if its just sitting there. you have to stick it to something.

google 'stickers 101' if you need more help understanding how stickers work.

      • Does the post not reek of sarcasm?

        stickers 101, or sarcasm 101.

Alternatively, he might be employed in a place with many sales people who constantly harass him all day.

        • +2

I worked with a guy who made a brown cardboard pyramid for his desk that said "GO AWAY" on all 4 sides…if you picked it up, the bottom read "CAN'T YOU TAKE A HINT???"

    • +1

      haha ya goose :)

    • No idea why people are downvoting you for making a funny joke…

Do people really need to put joke at the end of their post?

  • +1

    This is my DIY sign.
It works brilliantly! No door knockers in over 2 years.

    http://imageshack.com/a/img593/2702/s8ty.png

    Print, laminate, fix.

I just re-printed a new one, after 2+ years the old one had faced, red went orange etc.

    • The 'No Charity' line is the tricky part. I do want my sign to say that but at the same time, I don't want my neighbours / friends / families who visit to get a poor impression of me.

      • I know what you mean. My original sign never had the mention of charity but just the other day an annoying guy from a suspicious sounding organisation (I think the guy was just a druggy) pointed out that my sign doesn't mention charity. I got the shits at this and printed up a new sign the same day.

When friends/family come over I'll probably take it down so I don't look like a scumbag :)

  • These stickers are great. Not only do they save the home owner the weekly spiel of listening to the Latest-Must-Have-You'd-Be-Mad-To-Miss-It electricity offer, they save the poor sap walking door to door the energy of going through the motions knowing he'll never make the sale. Win-win.

  • +1

what if I have a doorbell, nothing says they can't ring it :p

    • +1

      Pull the batteries.
Only put them back in when people you like are at the door. ;)

  • I reported an electricity company to the ACCC last year and they told me that there was a recent court decision that makes these stickers unenforceable. Salesmen do have to leave immediately if you tell them to get off your property.

    • I would argue it thus.

The property owner has placed the sticker. Therefore, this is the permanent, default position of the owner. The sticker serves as a written equivalent to an oral directive to leave the property.

It's akin to No Trespassing signs and the like. Their only defense is if they can't read English.

    • Regardless of whether or not they are enforceable in law, I still abuse the hell out of them if they ignore it.

  • +1

What about the Australian Bureau of Statistics? Nothing stops them!
The "threat" of a $10000 fine for each day you don't respond (there is a relevant Act) after being asked for cooperation by the senior public servant…is a bluff.
    And easily thwarted.

In my case, I said "okay, ask away" at the door. They're like, "No we need to come in, plug in our notebook…"
"Sorry. I don't let anyone into my home unless I know them. If you're not willing to proceed here at the door, you can leave. Goodbye!"

Job done. Haven't heard from them in two years.

  • Do not knock. Ring the doorbell instead!!!

We have a loud bell on a chain as our doorbell and it surprises us how many people still insist on knock on the door. Then wonder why nobody answers the door. Since we can't hear them when they knock. Yet the doorbell is fine.

  • I have to tell my gumtree/ebay buyers to ignore my "do not knock" sign since they seem to get confused even though it says "no sales people". It has probably scared away some delivery people who just read the "do not knock" part.

  • -1

tbh i'm not a fan of this sign it feels wrong having this on your door

    • Why?

    • +1

Then don't. It's your choice, we're not forcing you!
Anal probes feel wrong to me, so I don't get them. Except for that one time when I was abducted by aliens!

  • +1

I like answering the door to door knockers

    a) naked

    and / or

    b) and tell them I'm about to have sex and to wait 1:30 - 2:45 mins (2:45 is on a good day)

  • Ha.

Had someone knock and then apologise to me saying that she wasn't allowed to knock because of the sticker…yeah…thanks for that, Origin backpacker girl!

  • +1

These cold calling salespersons are what is wrong with this country. Rather than getting a real job that contributes something tangible to the country, they simply try to coerce and trick money out of other people. They are no better than spammers or telemarketers or advertising executives. All parasites.

  • +1

    Got my ACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC one today,cheerZzzzzzzzz

  • Ordered 6, received Thursday. Good post, and useful to be reminded, because the ones I got last year have deteriorated.
