HELP! Trying to set up my TV….

Hey all,

Originally from Canada, so the cables are surprisingly different here, and I'm having a bit of trouble.

Please click on the link below to see the outputs/inputs I'm working with. In my wall, I see a two RF (?) inputs (slide #1 in link) and a Foxtel labelled cable outlet (slide #2). My TV has a single RF input I believe (slide #3).

All I want to do is get the free cable that is offered in NSW….can anyone advise me on how to do this? I have hooked up an RF to RF cable from the wall to my TV, but can't seem to get it working….what should the source be on my TV? Am I missing something?

My TV is a 2013 Sanyo, and is HD, so I don't think I need a set top box…..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated…thanks!

  • Remember that you will need to tune the TV. There should be an option to "autotune" the TV where it will scan for any channels available.

Not sure if you're renting but it's possible the RF output isn't hooked up to an antenna properly. That plug looks kind of wonky.

Longshot: Also check the RF on the TV says input and not output (some of them might have what is called a passthrough). You have to have it plugged into an RF input.

Can you get your hands on a set of portable antenna? If you can try plugging that into the TV and see if you get a signal.

Not an expert but just some ideas. Good luck.

  • Oh, and welcome to Australia.

  • Is there any free cable TV in NSW? Perhaps you mean free over-the-air TV. It seems strange having two wall outlets for that. Perhaps they were connected to different antennas at some stage, pointing to to different transmitter locations. I assume you have tried both?

Oh, where was the TV purchased? Is it for the Australian TV system?

  • +1

From a fellow Canuck, welcome to Oz.

I suppose what you mean by 'free cable', you mean 'Free to air'. They don't use cable here and don't have 'basic cable'. It's either 'Freeview' (free to air) or Foxtel.

Foxtel is like premium cable (like Rogers, Bell Expressvu) with the set top boxes.

Free view still relies on the radio waves and the repeaters here are pretty good so there isn't much need to get the same thing transmitted by wired cable. Your non Foxtel wall point is probably connected to a steel aerial on the roof catching the signal.

Now you haven't mentioned if your TV was bought from here or from North America. Basically a North American TV won't work here as they use different transmission/ reception technologies (you can use a set top box via HDMI though and catch the signal). But it you did get it from Oz it should have an auto tune feature to tune to the stations in your town, as Kendrite said.

However, in my experience depending on where you live, some signals might not come through. I bought one of these signal boosters and get all 20 something free channels through our rental units' common single aerial. (Works great, clear HD signal without digital glitches/signal loss ever… Got that problem through indoor antennas and without the booster though.)

As for the cable to connect from the wall to the tv itself, they're pretty inexpensive and can be bought from Canadian Tire Bunnings. It will be a Coaxial FM connector cable from the wall (slide 1) to your TV (slide 3) with both ends being male ( there will be a pin at the centre jutting out).

The Foxtel cable will need to be RF connector to join up to a set top box (slide 2), which will have a copper cable sticking out (not a steel pin) that you would screw to the RF port in the Foxtel box. Basic cable in Canada and the US uses this system where it's an RF connector that screws onto the TV female white plastic round port.

Or you can go to a Chinese discount store and try a pair of indoor rabbit ear aerials if your outdoor antenna is out.

  • The white slide in sockets look like regular antenna sockets for FREE to air tv.

The threaded single socket looks like a pay tv socket.

Did you bring your tv with you?? Is it the right voltage & hz for here? 240v 50hz (us have 110v 60hz).

You will need to retune your stations to work here. See the setup menu on your tv, if it is suitable.

  • and forget foxtel plug wont work unless you pay

  • one coaxial cable from aerial socket to tv and put tv on dtv input not atv( atv not work anymore no analog)
    scan for channels
if not work check aerial or try indoor aerial

  • Amazing everyone…thanks so much. The output from the wall was a bit wonky, so just had to take the face plate off and re establish the plug, then all she needed was a good "retune" and it was good to go! Thanks everyone for the advice and help….worked perfectly.
