Backlit Mechanical Keyboard MX Brown $95 Delivered @ Kogan

60

Previous price was $89, then it jumped to $129 and now $95 delivered which sounds good to me.
Cheapest backlit mechanical keyboard, though I haven't heard any feedback on how good/well-made the Kogan keyboard is.

Its MX Brown which is very light to press but have a teeny tactile bump as you press the key.

Many thanks to user 'sheeps' at Whirlpool for pointing out the price reduction + free delivery!
Not sure on when price may change again so I just put it till 14/02, fingers crossed.

Given there is hardly any price difference between this and other mechanical keyboards, I would not buy this.

    • What would you buy?

    • +1

For a backlit board this is cheap.

      • Yeah and it's a full keyboard, I got the cooler master tk storm for $95, the arrow and home/end etc keys are shared with the number pad toggled with the num lock key, it's nice and solidly built, delivered cost me $102

For both of my (non-mechanical) backlit boards I paid <$70 each

        • +1

          mechanical carries a premium

        • I am aware of this, I was simply pointing out to payton that backlit keyboards are available for less. From his comment it sounded like he thought $95 was a good price for any backlit keyboard, perhaps I was reading out of context.

        • We're in a mech board dealpage/thread so I thought I don't have to state it. Yes I'm aware rubberdome backlit boards go for far less. $95 is good price for a fullsize mech backlit board. Was browsing PCCG and the cheapest fullsize (+light) they have is Ducky Shine Zero at $119+$17 delivery = $136

    • $99 with free shipping at the moment.

    No Macro keys.

I bought one of these keyboards when it was $89. It is effectively a rebranded http://armaggeddon.net/gaming-keyboards/stealth-raptor-mka-7…. The keyboard itself functions as expected, everything works, key action is typical cherry brown (which is most people's favourite). All the media keys work, the macro keys work but they are awkwardly placed as Fn+ins/home/pgup/pgdown/end/del which makes them harder to use for a gaming reason.

The biggest disappointment for me with this keyboard is that there is a lot of noise on the headphone jack on the keyboard. There are a couple of extra plugs on the computer side of the usb cable for headphone and mic, and it seems that they are unshielded from the actual usb cable, which means I get more noise than wanted. While not noticeable while music is playing, it is noticeable when nothing is playing or when using a headphone amplifier. It would have been nice to be a DAC instead of being an extension cable, but would have driven the price up.

tl;dr On the whole, at $95 delivered, this keyboard is an absolute steal if you are looking for a mechanical keyboard. The noise on headphones is annoying, and would have been a dealbreaker if it was priced at the MKA-7 range.

uhh not sure why anyone would neg an informative review. Have a + from me

It's not a "steal," let alone an "absolute steal." It's an OK price for an OK board, but you have to deal with Kogan.

      • For a keyboard with similar features (10key, fully backlit, full set of media keys, macro keys and a usb port, I will discount the headphone/mic jacks because of the design flaw) the next cheapest price I could find shipped is $155. If something is ~60% the price of the next closest competitor, I count it as a great price. If you could find me something that matches at a competitive price, I will rescind my praise of this keyboard.

I have no grievances with Kogan, I have done returns with them before with no issue, shipping is prompt, and all my products have been as expected.

        • -3

Those features are garbage. Any keyboard can have media keys and the "macro keys" are software based— not hardware based. So the keyboard shipping with some skinned version of AutoHotKey is hardly something to parade.

If you choose that rather than a QuickFire Pro for the same price, or a QuickFire TK for another $15, then you are out of your mind.

        • Backlit, USB port, macro keys, media keys on a keyboard are garbage? Speak for yourself sonny!!

        • They're garbage because they have nothing to do with the keyboard. The macro keys are not dedicated macro keys: it's the home cluster just being reassigned at the software level. This is possible on ANY board. The same goes with the media keys: you can reprogram ANY cluster of keys to be media keys.

        • I know i can reprogram anything till the cows come home, but i still want a keyboard with all those 'garbage' features.

Not everyone games, not everyone can work out how to script AHK, some people just want DEDICATED controls. Whats perfect for you isn't always for others.

The difference in a solution fit doesn't make it wrong or right or garbage, just different.

        • What? Of course it makes it garbage because its blatant deception. Heck, I could reprogram keys on my $10 Microsoft keyboard and mouse combo through the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center software. Does that mean I can call them Macro keys?

The argument so far is "It's an OK keyboard because it comes with a USB port and a volume slider. Therefore, its worth paying $95 for a no-frills clone keyboard with less warranty than the original."

        • +2

So I actually just checked the macro keys (as I wasn't sure in the first place), but they are actually hardware based. Assigned the macro with the software provided, removed the software, macro still worked, tried on a different machine that has never had the software installed, macro still worked.

It isn't blatant deception, it's a feature. And media keys operated by a FN key is nice because I don't have to manually assign those shortcuts myself, dedicated keys would be nicer, but increases size and cost.

Once again, this is a nice keyboard, and no other keyboard matches the features in the same price range.

        • +2

Im not even debating the cost or this Kogan keyboard, just that someone here made a blanket statement that extra dedicated functionality added to any keyboard is garbage and useless to everybody.

I'll have to get back to you on the 'blatant deception' allegation, that one's a doozy.

These are rebranded Armageddon Stealth Raptor MKA-7 boards. Although this is pretty cheap for Australian stock (especially with full backlighting) it might be a better investment to spend the extra $10 or $15 and go with a more reliable merchant and get a more reliable board.

This only comes with 1 Year standard warranty but given these keyboards are expected to last >5 years (the switches are rated to last 50 million keystrokes IIRC) you would expect a longer statutory warranty of at least 24 months. Kogan has intentionally not mentioned this in order to make it more difficult to prove a statutory warranty case, but Cherry happily parades it, and you might have an argument given that they focused on Cherry in the title of the product.

Again, however, this is all headaches. Deal with other more reputable merchants who wont screw you around when you need their support. It's seriously not worth the small amount you'll save, given that these keyboards will last you a lifetime if cared for.

    • +1

What exactly makes the keyboard so unreliable?

Also where can you get a "better" backlit keyboard for $10-15 more? The cheapest I see is $136 delivered for a Ducky - $41 more

  • This a pretty good deal for a backlit mech keyboard. I paid $140 for my Ducky Shine II pickup >:

  • +1

Looks good if you are into backlit, but using a computer without ambient light is bad for your eyes anyway. So the value of backlit is questionable. If you don't want backlit there's better out there.

    • +1

This is a mechanical keyboard - not a cheap rubber dome keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are significantly different and cost significantly more. $95 is about what you'd normally pay for a non-backlit mechanical keyboard with no number pad.

  • Is mechanical keyboard that much better??

    • It depends who you ask but its a huge difference for me.
I'm a typist and found MX Red boards to be worth it
