Camcorder + Tripod stand Purchase help with model, brand...around $250

Hey guys

I'm looking to buy a camcorder (full hd 1080p) preferably and wanting to spend around $300 on camcorder itself, and also buy a tripod stand and an external mic that picks up human voice sound clearly from a distance of say around 20-40M away indoors.

So needing some help with model, brands and stuff of 'camcorder', 'tripod stand', 'external mic possibly - if internal camcorder mic is not good'.

Looking for a basic tripod around $30-$70.

Don't really know much about camcorders as I've always had a DSLR camera (have a nikon d3100 at the moment) so I would really appreciate some help.

I have been looking at the JVC evorio model for around $199 but don't know anything about it.

Cheers guys!

  • Hey mate,

I have a JVC everio handheld camcorder that does 1080. It is 4 years old and never used. I have been meaning to flog it off (comes with box, case, the lot)

Happy to sell this for $50 cash.

PM me if you are interested. Sorry to hijack thread, however I'd rather see this go to a good home then sit in a box for another 5 years.

  • Hi not sure if you have bought any yet, but I have recently thinking to buy one too so did some research that might help you with model selection

    1) what do you need the camcorder for? would ur DSLR be too bulky or difficult to operate/firm for what you want? generally ur DSLR should have better quality due to bigger sensor, not sure if D3100 record full HD but I would guess so.

    2) how much u need from optical zoom? say I am looking for a camcorder to record game match or wedding event, last night I have grabbed a Panasonic V520 from Costco (50x optical and upto 80x advanced zoom), which is quite a good model for the zoom.

    3) is it for beginner ? do you use more with tripod?
what you need to consider is the anti-hand-shake function (or so called image stabiliser), the optical image stabiliser (OIS) is so much better than Digital method. also with a tripod you don't need to worry about the jerky image.. but if u need to walk & film, then I would recommend something not at the bottom range.

    4) brand & model
JVC 100E, 40x optical zoom, good camera for the price, bottom price I ever seen at DSE is $129 but now back to 200 plus, I guess you can get it down to $180 in any store and u are doing well. ( but I found the zoom is a bit slow by default, if this can be adjusted please let me know, the depth of field seems actually somehow better in the same range)

Panasonic V110, plastic feel, but with ok function, better LCD screen than Sony CX220, and should be slightly cheaper if u get a bargain (around $199 - 229)

SONY PJ230, I came across this at Costco one week ago, selling $279 including extra battery pack & a carry case, which is a great deal, and It has a 13lum projector!(just casual use is fine in dark). (but by the time I grab my fd who is a member in the following weeks, they are out of stock in Sydney Area)

Panasonic V520, great OIS, excellent zoom, $449 at Costco, with extra battery & carry case, and a desk Tripod(small one), I got this last night. I saw review said this model still not very good with low light but I tend to use it more in day so it wont bother me much.

    Hope this helps!
