Depends what your options are and whether price is a factor.

If it's between these two, the iPad is the better tablet, but it also costs more. It has a better screen, higher resolution. However, no SD card slot, which the Sony has.

A Note 10.1 2014 edition however costs the same as an iPad, and that's a more direct comparison. It has a higher resolution screen than the iPad, and an SD card slot. If you need more than 16GB, the Note is better value because Apple will charge $100 for every doubling of internal memory, while buying an SD card is quite cheap. You can also find these on sale from time to time unlike iPads which never budge by much if at all.

Other factors are what devices you already own. If you already have an iPhone and lots of apps for it, then getting an iPad means you can redownload the apps you already purchased. If you got an Android phone, then the Android tablet will be able to use those apps.

Samsung is coming up with a new tablet range called TabPro which will be available in 8.4, 10.1 and 12" all at 2560x1600 res, Snap 800. They will be the same as the Note but without the pen. The 8.4 will have the highest pixel density of any tablet ever made so far.

You can't compare apple with bananas.

Not raging or anything but this probably belongs in the forum, not really a bargain?

Anyway if you're looking at iPads I reckon the Mini with Retina is in a good place, a lot of people will prefer the size for one handed use / portability, and the specs are identical (cept battery) for $100+ less.

    • Odd that you say it's useable with one hand. Steve Jobs steadfastly refused any iPhone greater than 3.5" because even a 4" phone was too big to be used with one hand. The 4" iPhone 5/5S would have him turning in his grave. He said 3.5" was the perfect size, and the only perfect size. No more, no less.

You're saying a 7.9" tablet is useable with one hand… which is totally not what Apple thinks.

It should be noted also that the Mini Retina does not have the full RGB color gamut but only 62% of it. You don't get the full range of colours you would on an Air, or even a Nexus 7.

  • Spend a decent time with both. Have a play at both an Apple Store and a Sony Centre / other if one's anywhere near you. It's all specs on paper until you actually pick one up and use it. Having said that, I believe the number of apps specifically customised for the iPad still outnumbers that of android tablets by a REALLY large margin - I don't have the numbers unfortunately - but you'd really notice it to when a tablet app is really just a stretched-put phone app. Anyway, play with the most likely apps you'll be using : )
