I can't afford those places at the mall. I don't know, something about spending $80 on one 8.5x11 sickens me.
They had a deal at my local pharmacy, something like 12 photos for $65.
Did that but haven't seen any deals like that since. There are a lot of offers on livingsocial for an initial $29 or $50 fee but that's for like, one photo.
Any ideas on where to go for photos in Sydney or southern suburbs?

I second the 'find a friend' - put the word out on Facebook and see if anyone responds. I take pictures of all my friends kids for fun, it's just something I enjoy doing.
I actually thought about the costs over time of getting photos of the kids and invested in a semi-decent DSLR. I decided I'd prefer to get lots of pretty good shots of them day to day, and do the odd photo shoot in the backyard, than pay regularly for posed shots. Very happy with my decision. You get better with practice and the new cameras practically do it all for you.
Do your own photography or find a friend who's into it.
Otherwise find a cheap photographer on Gumtree perhaps, who will provide photos on a CD that you can get printed yourself… maybe someone who's trying to build up their portfolio if you're willing to let them use the photos for advertising purposes.
You get what you pay for with professional photography to some extent. I agree $80 per photo at those Pixifoto places is a rip off, only because their photos are terrible and tacky to begin with! You can occasionally find that sort of 'supermarket' photo setup at markets for cheaper if its what you're into though!
