Is there a term for this situation?

I'm sure most if not all OzBers have come across this situation..

Example: You have a coupon for $10 off a $50 spend. You want an item that is $49.99 but it doesn't qualify for the discount. You'd happily donate an extra cent to your cart in order to get the discount but there's no option to do so. You also consider adding the cheapest item on the site but there's nothing cheap enough to make the discount worthwhile. In the end, you might decide to not continue with the order after all because something that should be simple has become unnecessarily complicated.

Is there a term for this? Something a bit more succinct than Denial of Donated Loose Change in Order to Apply a Discount…

  • No idea what the term is. It's happened to me a lot. I think in some stores they use it very skilfully to force people to purchase the 'cheapest' item on the site which turns out to be at least another $20+

  • Had a problem like this trying to take up an offer in Big W. I was trying to combine tow targeted everdyay rewards offers in one shop. I had to spend $20 in a particular department and $30 across the store. The items I wanted in the particular department were $9.99 so I bought three of them and then an item worth less than $1 to take me over the $30 mark. It was very annoying. Luckily I got about $5 worth of points for the transaction so I didn't mind spending the extra $1 or whatever it ended up being.

They are called fillers. It's one of the dilemas Amazon buyers have where they need to get their orders up to $35 in order to qualify for free shipping.

Slickdeals has a site dedicated to finding fillers.
