I'm using an OPEN 824 RLW modem/router but I'm gradually losing my internet connection and having to restart the modem. Can you please recommend a good value modem/router.

Billion are very good quality at a reasonable price with great local support and excellent performance. I'd highly recommend them. My 7800NXL seems to be able to handle a huge volume of concurrent connections and traffic without ever skipping a beat.
Draytek are great too but they start at a much higher price so probably not what you want.
