Bl00dy Melburians stealing our Grand Prix
It just came back home to Victoria, where it belongs…
Yay jv our saviour!
Of course they r just doing it to boost numbers.
Bet when ozbargainersget 10 free tix they count each ad attendee!
If it costs victorians $100m ayear is it reallya bargain lol
Yes because as a non-Victorian, it costs me sweet nothing.
If it costs victorians $100m ayear is it reallya bargain lol
pretty sure events like the F1 and Australian open cost plenty of $, just like events like the AFL grand final…but no one ever mentions the AFL grand final being a waste of money (despite F1, Australian Open getting way more coverage outside of Vic and therefore more benefit for the $)..
but as someone with tickets and accomodation booked for Melbourne this year, I think Melbourne hosting the F1 is a bargain
Lol no, thegrand final is a huuuuge money spinner for the afl and clubs.
Packed, overpriced seats and $corporates and it doesnt cost much more than a normal match. Bit more razzamataz etc.
Does melbourneneed more coverage! Doubt it.
Supposedlythese events provide jobs and multiplier effects forthe economy…but really its a just a ripoffso bigwigs can dine etc at taxpayer expense…a modern colosseum.
Give thesilly raceback to adelaide.
Only good news is billionaire (thx to us etc) eccelstone is set to go to jailM
Is your spacebar broken?
If you think the opening round of the Formula 1 World Championship, one of the most-watched sporting events of the year, way, way ahead of the fricken AFL Final, Tennis, whatever you want to list, is bad for Melbourne…then you are foolish.
Domestic television ratings suggest Tennis is way ahead of the Grand Prix, don't know about internationally. Nevertheless, the Grand Prix is a worthwhile event. ;-)
It costs the tax payer about $50m for the GP, about $30m for the tennis, and under $1m for the AFL GF.
It costs the tax payer about $50m for the GP, about $30m for the tennis, and under $1m for the AFL GF.
and how many more people from outside of victoria are exposed to (or travel to and spend $..) either of those other events? 30, 50, 100 times more?
as an f1 fan (and one travelling to Melbourne this year and spending >$1000 while there) the opening round of the F1 season is the biggest sporting event in terms of international coverage that Australia regularly hosts..
I am from Germany and moved to Australia 7 years ago. I had no clue that something like the AFL even exists - but the F1 race and Tennis is something which is Melbourne known for … at least for my family and friends overseas. The AFL is pretty much an "Melbourne only" event so I would say the relations are correct.
When you extend this to Australia … it's just the Sydney Opera House, then the desert and "crazy" wildlife … :-). So not bad to have two major sporting events in there for Melbourne.
(… it's like most Australians think Germany is the "Oktoberfest and Lederhosen").
Did you also know that nobody here drinks Fosters?
Mhhh … not so sure about that ;-) They are good in rebranding … VB, Cascade, Crown, Pure Blonde, Carlton … sounds all like Fosters to me :-). But agree … the actual Fosters beer is hard to get here in Victoria :-).
Thats so true, change the bottle and perception of taste changes.
It seems the ticket download button is broken…
Super Glue ?
I don't think there are any F1 practice sessions on the Thursday…
Thats been the case for the last few years.
Friday P1 and P2
Saturday P3 and Q1-Q3
Sun Race
Yep, what's the point of FREE F1 tickets when there aren't any F1.
I can guarantee there have been F1 cars out there today. Not practice sessions but definitely F1 cars on the track. They were out this morning about 7.30 and again a bit before before lunch.
Source: I work on St Kilda Road and can hear the bloody things all day (not literally but they are distracting when i'm sitting at my desk and not watching them). Sounds like super fast mosquitos…
Yes, I heard that too, in Port Melbourne … it's either F1 cars or a gigantic swamp of mosquitos.
I'm also on St Kilda Road but have only seen V8 Supercars from the few glimpses I've seen.
Any chance of meeting the drivers or their cars?
You'll need a pit pass for that… Usually included with the corporate passes…
Cheers
How do we recieve free ticket?
"i" before "e" except after "c"
What about 'veil'?
that's weird !!!
"i" before "e" except after "c", or when you command someone to "seize their eight feisty beige neighbours being weird."
In an episode of QI it was asserted by Stephen Fry that thus rule of thumb is wrong specifically because their are more words that break this rule than follow this rule in the dictionary.
Only because most people only know half of the rule. It's I before E except after C when the sound is E. So in the sentence above, seize is an exception, but the others don't have an 'E' sound so the rule doen't apply.
Thursday is always free. There is no F1 action this day.
You cant even see the pits unless you have a paddock pass or a pit walk pass.
Still other free entertainment to be had..
Thursday is always free.
I think they started that only from last year…
Yeah I think it was last year. The same year they stopped giving people living in the area free tickets for Thursday, now we get nothing! Except sweet sweet early alarm clocks.
Melbourne? Ha!
Agreed…
Formula One Grand Prix
Australian Open Tennis
Melbourne Cup / Spring Racing Carnival
Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix
Australian Masters golf
Boxing Day Test
AFL Grand Final
Meredith Gift
They could do much better……
everyone seems to forget Moomba… ;-)
It was forgotten since they stopped televising the Birdman Rally :(
jv I noticed your list includes mostly ball sports like the Meredith Gift for instance. ;)
Went last year with my (then) 7yo son. Lost of classic cars, V8s, and the special area for the kids was great. Even some plane action. Yes, no current F1 but lots of other racing car fun. Had a great day, and will definitely try to go again.
Lost of classic cars
I hope you found them again.
How old is your son now?
and has the school truancy officer caught up with him for skipping school that day?
link to free tickets doesn't work.
Double checked by going to Ticketmaster direct they are saying Thursday General Admission tickets are not available yet
Don't know why I was negged, just saying it wasn't working and that I checked Ticketmaster direct????
Cos' you negged the deal, which you've since revoked…
well tickets aren't available which is why I negged the deal.
he revoked this morning (No neg vote when i checked) but people kept down voting for no reason
Not working for me!
Not yet working … but I am sure it will be soon … :-)
I went last year and there was lots of entertainment. Ideal for young kids … you get the entertainment without the noise. And I don't care if there is a F1 car zooming around or not …
Nitro Circus, Lightning McQueen, Porsche Driving School, Classic Cars, and some cars going around the track … not bad for free. There is something for everyone (even when you are not into cars).
They might want to get the visitor numbers up. Fine with that. For me it's like they give something back to Melbourne. Lots of tax money spend so lets use the free entertainment.
Thanks!
Anyone have tips/deals on cheaper tickets for the other 3 days (Fri-Sun)?
Watch on TV for a better view
planning to go for the Thursday (free) and Sunday (Turn 15 Premium zone).

Thanks OP, collected 20. Going to distribute it around at work for coworkers & their families. Highly doubt anyone's going to knock off early though.. what with.. 4 hours remaining? Lol =p
Just a warning to all that are going this afternoon. You still need a ticket from the box office to get in. What a waste of paper! Then you can't enter via gate 1 as that's reserved for the Corporate Ticket Holders. In other words, the freeloaders can't be seen entering through the same gate as the rich corporate people.
In other words, the freeloaders can't be seen entering through the same gate as the rich corporate people.
I think it's only because they have paid a lot to receive good service, much like Museum Members have a priority queue (for example).
Well to be fair Gate 1 is for all grandstand ticket holders as well, and also there are few good GA viewing spots around that area.
all those sooking about nothing F1 on today..
keep in mind Thursday is the only day F1 drivers are scheduled in the driver signing area which is open to everyone. this is the only day F1 drivers officially do the signings and do it for the whole day.
Also the supposed F1 cars heard today i dare say was the 2 seater going around the track.
There was also a F1 vs V8 supercar vs road car comparison (missed it though as had to leave just before then).
so Perth = get loss?
No. No.
Melbourne = Get Loss
Perth = Get Lost
Won't be a loss by my definition if it is not free cos I will never pay to get in.
So, guys, was it any good?
Went for a quick look over lunch break
Saw
- the Roulettes do their flyovers
- Globe of Death with the motorcycle
- Torah Bright take a few pics with fans
- Some other guys in the racing jumpsuits but obviously not famous enough that I'd recognise them
- a few grid girls :)
Well worth the $0.00 entrance fee
Went with kids. Saw some amazing classic cars hooning around the track in the morning, plus the Roulettes put on a great show overhead. The kids went to the Porsche/Michelin tent where (for free) they got to ride around on some pedal cars & got a show bag including a decent quality cap…. Anyhow, definitely worth it.
Went on the Thursday last year. Great day out.
Vintage touring cars, v8 supercars, porsche cup racing, couple of older F1 cars doing laps. Will go again this year. Thanks OP
