What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video.

model B with case works out to be less than $52 shipped from Element14.
They had a model B + case package for around $46 shipped before but I can't find it anymore…

You can get the pi and a better case from element 14 for under $52 delivered.

Also, they have a 5% discount for your first order IIRC

    Edit ^ what he said

I bought mine from RS Electronics, which I believe is an official distributor. It's $41.08 for the Model B RPi, and $11.40 for a "clear" case (it's more smokey/semi-transparent). Their website is absolutely atrocious to navigate, though, so there's that. They do provide free next-day delivery, however.

    • Both of those prices are ex-GST, so the true price is (41.08 + 11.40) x 1.1 = $57.73.

      Element14 are cheaper.

RS were cheaper previously, but they forwarded you through to their UK site, and delivery took weeks. Good to see they now have local stock, but be warned: many of the links on their website still forward you to the UK site. Try searching for "raspberry" for example, and you'll end up at the UK site, purchasing in pounds.

      • Ah yes, you're quite correct about the GST. It's still cheaper than the OP, however, and you have a selection of different cases to choose from, plus express postage.

I didn't know the best place to buy the RPi, which is why I ended up at RS. The website is God-awful, which is what I mean about it being atrocious to navigate. I'll remember Element14 when recommending it to friends.

As others mentioned above, Cheaper at element14 and free shipping over $45.

I definitely recommend getting a RaspPi if you are thinking about getting one, as my one is currently doing all of the following plus much more, but as mentioned above by others there are cheaper alternatives.

    • Mumble Server (Open Source Voice Comm.)

    • Web Server (Apache2/PHP/MySQL)

    • USB TV Tuner Host (TVHeadEnd)

    • LimeLight-Pi (https://github.com/irtimmer/limelight-pi)
NVIDIA GameStream receiver which streams your PC Games to wherever your Pi is plugged into (basically an NVIDIA SHIELD minus the hardware and Android OS).
Note: NVIDIA Desktop GPU GTX600+ required

    • NAS (Network Attached Storage)

    • Cloud File Server (ownCloud)

    • Thanks for the tip on LimeLight-Pi, just what I was about to start looking into.

    • Ooh, I should look into setting up a vent/mumble/TS server, web server and maybe some NAS on my RPi. Mine is currently being used as a home media centre (with OpenELEC), but I used NOOBS to also install Raspbian. How easy is it to set up a variety of different servers?

    • Do any of the OS variants have BOTH a good web browser AND good media playback? I tried several a few months ago, and could only find one or the other.

Note also that MPEG2 hardware decoding is crippled until you pay a few dollars for an MPEG2 license. Installing VLC gets around this, but VLC uses software decoding AFAIK.

Looking to turn a dumb TV into a smart TV.

Thanks for reminding me that I needed one of these. I'm going to run a light web server on it and connected it to my dad's solar inverter because he's obsessed with checking the power levels of his array.

  • By the way price is in USD (~AUD 61.58). Definitely no deal!

  • $53.99 + Free Shipping

    That's Aussie dollars, right Rep?

    • It's USD. And an Acrylic Shell will be shipped with Raspberry Pi.

  • So viability of building a portable MAME cabinet off of one of these suckas?

  • Rep, Please put USD on title. so how is this a bargain for (approx.) AUD 61.58?
    Unless I'm missing something.

  • I bought mine from this site and couldn't be happier with their service and price:

    http://www.buyraspberrypi.com.au/shop/product-category/kits/…

I bought the FLIRC receiver, and then bought an Xbox 360 media remote to use with it.

  • dumb question but do i need to program this or does it run linux??

    • +1

Not sure if the neg is necessary.

The raspberry pi runs several arm based linux distros, there ir more info all over the web, and they can be programmed if you wish, can also use the GPIO, buy many add ons, or can be used as a low cost XBMC box to play movies.

  • are they going to update the specs on the raspberrypi?
