Advice on Phuket travels

Hi all,
Long-time follower, first time poster.
My fiancée and I are getting married October 25th 2014 and will be heading off soon after on our honeymoon to Phuket. Our first bub is due mid-March and she'll be coming along with us (~7 months).
We bought this Scoopon deal on the weekend and opted for the 10 nights in the 'upgraded' suite. In order to qualify for the booking guarantee we need to book within 14 days of purchase.
We're thinking of splitting our trip into 2 parts; half at a quiet, secluded, more luxurious resort (above), and the other half (up to another 10 nights but can be shorter) in a busier spot with more shopping, markets, entertainment etc. We'll probably start our trip in the busy spot and end at the quieter resort for some R&R. Can anyone recommend a good area of Phuket to spend our 'busy' time? We would hope to be able to stay close enough to be able to walk to town, but far enough that it's still a resort feel and not right in the centre of all the night life.
We'll probably explore the option to get a baby sitter on a couple of occasions; does anyone have any experience/guidance on this topic?

One thing I'm sure all the OzBargainers can help us out with is flights - we're fairly flexible with when we'll fly. We're from Canberra so will travel to/from Sydney (fly or Murrays bus) for the international flights. Earliest departure date is 29th October to give us some time to recoup after the wedding, so using the maximum number of 20 nights in Thailand (excluding any overnight flights) would have us departing Phuket November 18th. We're willing to compromise on flight quality a little in order to save some dough, but considering we'll have the bub we don't want to go with the extreme 'no-frills' flights. It would be great if we could fly Qantas as I've got lounge access (also have Virgin lounge access) and they're always great on board + fares include food, entertainment etc. Putting the above dates into WebJet gives me a return fare of $1068pp on Qantas which seems reasonable? [edit: those flights have since disappeared & cheapest Qantas is now $1278]. In my research on OzBargain I've heard that going through Expedia Brazil can result in even cheaper fares? Or is that just with the more budget companies?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi georgejetson.
As for flights you should try an engine like http://www.skyscanner.com.au/ it pretty much has all airlines and you can tweak things like day ahead/day back - even search by month for cheapest fare. It links onto the airlines website as opposed to making the booking on their site (like Webjet, but they charge you a fee).
As for your scoopon - I strongly suggest being careful with those, from past experience there are certain T&C's and seeing you pay such a cheap price (along with Scoopon taking a commission on each sale), the merchant wont be willing to accommodate everything and bend over backwards compared to a normal/full paying customer. Just my take on the matter, I'm sure others have had a good experience.
    Hope this helps.

    • Thanks Ezza :)
We've used Scoopon and similar sites a few times previously and have been happy, but I guess it can be hit-and-miss. I'd like to think we're fairly resilient travellers too so we'll just go with the flow. Thanks again!

  • The busiest spot in Phuket would be Patong beach

  • Going Nov you will hit peak season, so generally all hotel prices will double.
Cape Panwa is on the quieter side and you will generally find you are more captive to the hotel…. quite a bit less to do just outside your backdoor.
For busy and shopping you will want Patong. Irrespective of everyone's views that it is busy/sleazy/etc, it is still the place to go, particularly after 10 days at Panwa, you will be craving some action.
The heart of Patong is around Bangla Road & JungCeylon shopping centre areas. Find them on a map and avoid.
For your situation (your desire to be close enough but not quite in the centre) I would avoid staying within 500m of those areas.
For suggestions only (this is more to suggestions of location as opposed to the hotels, even though the hotels are quite nice)… look up Nap Hotel to the north, and Duangjitt to the south.

Expedia Brazil is worth a look, but only works into Bangkok…. then you need a domestic flight to Phuket (and a change of airports to grab a low cost carrier). Bangkok is an hour further as well.
Jetstar (or other carrier that flies direct) might be your better bet.

Use a website like Trivago, Agoda or Travelnow to do your research (they have good filters on hotel star rating, review score, distance), then refer this list for where to book to get best deal:

Note also that a lot of hotels don't have their Nov pricing out yet, so you will get a lot of 'no available rooms for dates selected' returned.

    • Thanks for the info, Battler!
We'll be doing Panwa at the end of the trip, so we're hoping to tire ourselves out before then in order to make the most of the serenity.
Great advice about the location & flights, thanks very much :)
Any suggestions on when is a good time to book accommodation? Earlier or risk it and leave 'til later? I guess we'll just do some research on prices so we're knowledgable enough to pounce on a good deal when we see one!

  • I literally got back from Phuket yesterday.

One tip I can give you is to look closely at the day trips available with the local sellers (you will see them all over Patong). You will notice some "special offers" - check these out. We did one of these trips to the islands and it was great value. The special was 1000 Baht, down from 2,500 Baht - that roughly translates to a discounted island tour for around $30 AUD. A full day trip - it included all transport to and from hotels - the boat trip - snorkel hire - lunch (nice it was too!) - morning tea (fruit and a bun) - and drinks all day (fruit drinks and water). If you want to snorkel I would recommend brining your own snorkel - I didn't and used the one given to me and later though - geeze I wonder whose dirty stinking mouth that was in before I shoved it in my gob!!

    Good luck - enjoy.
