        Worked for me (GNoteII)

        • After a few more tries it finally went through. It did crash my Google Play.

        • Same here as well
          Thanks OP Great app!

How convenient timing, now that LogMeIn is kicking their free users out. I'll have to try both this and TeamViewer.

    • +1

God am I glad I never actually paid for the overly priced LogMeIn app for Android (when the iOS version is free). I've used LogMeIn for years and now they pull this crap?

Shame that VNC appears to be over the network only.

Teamviewer is a great product, I use it at work and home

    • +7

Teamviewer has worked immensely well for me. Simple to setup and use, very fast and it works both over the LAN and Internet. Free version has a little popup after each session, but it's a very minor inconvenience for quality software at no cost.

      • I'd like to know how this is different or better than TW, which I've used and think is fantastic.

  • +1

Nice find, especially now that Logmein stops the free version

Edit: beaten by a few seconds :)

  • Thanks for the heads up. Should be handy in the future.

  • I setup a HTPC on a Mac mini running plex for a family member. They're now v good technically so there's often a 'little' problem I could fix if I lived closer.

Could I use this to help them from home?

    Thx :)

    • +1

Unfortunately VNC is only for connection within the same network. You do have the alternative of installing and setting up the TeamViewer for unattended-access on that HTPC though which you can then manage remotely from home through your TeamViewer account.

      • Thankyou :)

Actually, VNC does work over the Internet, but there's a bit more work involved. You'd need to forward port 5900 on the router to the IP of the Mac Mini, then you can connect using the public WAN IP address. If your IP address isn't static, you can set up a dynamic DNS address for free (e.g. bellpop.remoteaccess.me), and install an app on the Mac Mini that makes sure that the address always points to the right IP address.

I'd caution this one, even with a password, VNC has traditionally sent its password unencrypted. This means that someone could intercept your password in cleartext and use that to log on to your machine.
Port 5900 is a favourite for port scanners as well so you may want to set it up on a different port instead.

      • you can open up a port on your firewall to access externally just make sure you put in password security

    • Yes you can, very safely, by setting up a vpn or ssh port forward between the 2 sites. Idally since it is mac OpenVPN would be the go. You could use pptp but it isnt very secure - i would stick with an ssh port forward or openvpn - both are pretty easy to set up.

      • Still don't understand how you would do this through your phone and this app… it sounds as though you need additional software on the phone to create the SSH tunnel?

    • A good idea is to use it as an "iTunes Server", leaving iTunes running, and accessing movies/tv shows being shared on an Apple TV, iTunes, or iOS device. Works really well!

    Teamviewer is the bees knees.

    • great for occasional conections to systems on the other side of the net. bad idea with your own net as an unnecessary security risk

Still, download it now, so if in future you do need it, you can download again for free.

Team viewer is as awesome as wet toilet wipes (a good thing).

    • BTW, a lot of "flushable" wipes are not flush-able at all. They can clog up your toilet.

  • how different is this to splashtop???

    • Much slower than Splashtop for LAN use.

      • +1

Funny how Splashtop should be referred to just after Demarco brought up the topic of flushable wipes. Maybe use the wipes after you you've Splashtop'ed?

  • Thx OP. Been waiting for a good free VNC client is IOS for ages.

  • Sweet. Have been testing a few out with not much sucess.

Now I guess ill try this out.

  • Interested in trying this - I currently use TeamViewer for access to my computers outside of home and Splashtop for LAN connections.

    • +1

I use TeamViewer and Splashtop as well. Tried the free VNC desktop app and the Android app, but uninstalled it 15 mins later. LAN performance is no where close to Splashtop so useless for streaming, and TeamViewer IMO is a better alternative for WAN use because its far more easier to use especially if you want to use it to provide quick support to a friend/family member over the internet.

  • cheers!

  • Once free on Google Play, always free on Google Play. Am I right?

    • You would think so….

    • Isn't it more like once bought (free or not) always available to you?

  • Anyone know if it can work with UltraVNC on the server?

    • Sure it can. However UltraVNC provides additional features. The RealVNC client with UltraVNC server will revert to the lowest common denominators. UltraVNC's main benefits are with the desktop driver on the server though, so you should find RealVNC client a good match.

  • Sorry…stupid question coming up.

To use this I will need to have my PC turned on, logged in and connected to the WWW right?

    • You need:

      1. PC connected to network
      2. VNC server configured and running on PC

Also if not connecting from your local network you may need to redirect port 5900 in your modem. Also unblock it on the firewall.

      Google is your friend.

This + ConnectBot on Android to use SSH tunnel to connect to home computer from the internet :)

    • here is missing puzzle piece, that's why scotty is scotty

      instructions for the ignorant ?

  • Thanks OP.. Hopefully the deal will last until I can get a hold of my wife's Note 3.

Just log in to the play store from any device and buy it. You dont need to access the play store on the device you want the ap on.

      • Yeah, once "bought" it's available for all your devices.

  • I have moved away from VNC. Since I started using Team Viewer I have never looked back.

    • I use both - they're different functions. Teamviewer requires someone at the other end, VNC doesn't.

      • You can install teamviewer host instead of the regular teamviewer. Then you can set a permanent password thus not requiring anyone to tell you the unique pin every time.

You can even remove the need to type the password every time if you create a teamviewer account (free) then save your target pcs in your account with passwords

So I can sign into teamviewer application using my account on iPad or PC then just pick the machine to connect to. Only takes about 2-3 clicks.

  • Great that its free, works nicely…I'm just struggling with the counter-intuitive scroll interface i.e. you are supposedly 'moving the mouse', not dragging the screen as you're used to on 99% of mobile touchscreens.

  • It's free. But not a limited time. According to this, once and Android app goes free it can't be reversed…

    Thanks!

  • Wow, is it seriously normally over $10?

Who would pay that much for a VNC client?

  • this is interesting
hmm might give it a go

  • Just an FYI, after installing the VNC Server on my Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit it changed the Windows colour scheme to Basic and completely messed up things in Photoshop and games as the OpenGL was affected.

I had only just put new GPU drivers on my PC so I thought that was the issue, so I was uninstalling, reinstalling, tried earlier drivers, and nothing worked until I uninstalled VNC Server and now it all works swimmingly.

Guess I'll maybe install and uninstall whenever I want to use it..
