NBN: Should I be a Whirlpooler or an OzBargainer (Fast vs. Cheap)?

I'll be moving into a new place soon which has NBN.

The Whirlpooler in me says I should get the fastest Internet connection possible…because, well, I can.
The OzBargainer in me says I should get the cheapest/best value Internet connection.

Dilemma. I'm on an 8/1 ADSL2 connection currently ($60/month). Realistically, I'd probably only need a 12/1 connection however for $5 more ($65/month) I can double my speed and get a 25/5. However, the 100/40 is very tempting but is $90/month.

So what would you do? Cheap or fast?

  • FAST!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well… How fast does porn download at???
there is the answer to the OPs question!

    • Depends on the provider and your download host. Using sabnzbd/usenet I can top out my connection (around 9.8 MB/s)

  • Exetel is really expensive, try another provider, Internode is the best all round in my personal opinion, and look at the plans they cheaper and faster…

      Actually, its the exact opposite.

      Internode 25/5 300GB which counts uploads - $74.95 + $100 setup fee
      Exetel 25/5 150GB/unlimited which doesn't count uploads - $64.50 + $50 setup fee

      Internode 25/5 - 30GB - $55
      Exetel 25/5 - 50GB - $55

If you were a true OzBargainer, you'd demand NBN for the price of dial up. Just sayin :-)

Just wanted to update the thread.

OzBargainers, despite being tightarses, overwhelming suggested going for the more expensive option. I just couldn't justify spending $25 more per month so I applied for the $65, 25/1 150GB plan.

So I applied and a couple of days go by with no word from Exetel. I go to their website to check the status of the application and discover a whole new website with new plans.

25/1 500GB is now $60. More importantly the 100/40 500GB plan is $80 . Sold. So I canceled the original application and applied for the 100/40.

Just waiting the 5-7 business days for them to flip the switch.

    • Nice, I will be jealously waiting to hear how it turns out.

    • Enjoy your NBN!

  • Just got connected and am plugged directly into NBN box. Getting weird speeds.

Speedtest saying I'm getting 30 down and 67 up. WTF?
OzSpeedtest says I'm getting 18 down.
Exetel's speedtest says 7.99 Mbps down
    CNET saying 33 Mbps down.

    Linux ISO Bittorrent 15.2 down

Nowhere near 100 down however the up is quite impressive.

Looks like it has more upload bandwidth than OzBargain's server - we can now serve this website from neil's apartment :)
