Beer for Australia Day

Australia Day is fast approaching: 26th January 2014

It seems fitting that on this day beer drinkers should support an Australia Beer.
Not just one that is brewed in Australia but is still under the control of local ownership.

So in general what is the best value, best tasting, Australian owned and brewed beer that is nationally available?

The only real brand I can think of is Coopers. Is there another?

  • Looked on Ausbuy app. Broo was the only one there.

Maybe why its difficult to find an Aussie owned beer…..

The company was started on the basis that Broo would remain 100% Australian owned. Grogan stated at the time that the company's charter dictates that the company can never transfer shares to any company or individual that resides in a foreign jurisdiction.[3]
      Sales of shares

In 2011, a publicity program associated with the lager involved giving away shares in Grogan's brewery.[4] Grogan estimates that over 7,000 people now hold shares in the company. In August 2012 the ASX refused to list the company because it deemed its policy to restrict foreign ownership "inappropriate".[2][3] In June 2013 the company launched its second beer, Australia Draught,[5] with the company pledging to donate 20% of its profits from the sale of the beer to two charities - the SAS Resources Fund and Commando Welfare Trust.[6]

  • A bit late to the conversation - but of the Australian beers, which come in the authentic Aussie 375ml size, and not the stingy Euro 330ml?

    • Coopers are 375ml :)

45ml matters? That's 1.5 shot glasses, ie half a mouthful.

struth, sheikyerbouti u r on ozbargains, remember marginal gains:)

        • +2

It's the principle of the thing. For millennia in Australia beer has come in 375ml cans or bottles. Then suddenly they try and foist 330ml on us for no good reason. If 45ml is so insignificant then they should have no trouble sticking it in the bottle and shipping it out to us.

Big Head by Burleigh Brewing Company is delicious, no carb and owned by a local couple.

2 Brothers Brewery in Moorabbin (especially the Growler)

    4 Pines for me.

Pricey but can sometimes be had for around the $60 mark or better when on special. My local, generally a ripoff, Liquor Stax has them 2x6packs for $35 (bottles are 330ml). I always ask for the best price, or at least if i'm only buying a 6 pack if i can get the case price divided by 4, they usually agree.

Great beers, esp the wheet beer.

  • Stone and Wood is partially owned by Little World Beverages (Lion)

Coopers is probably the only one that ticks the boxes for wide availability and cheap price.
It also taste's pretty good provided you're buying Pale Ale (Green), Sparkling Ale (Red) or ideally Vintage.

    • +1

you forgot to mention best extra stout - the best mainstream aussie one :)

never understand the fuss about their pale ale, but i also like sparkling ale and vintage, both of which can be cellared to age like wine, and indeed coopers used to sell special old stout

      • You are correct sir. And Dark Ale! (which is my favourite Winter Brew! and quite possibly why they didn't cross my mind, not really the weather for either..)
Even their Mid is OK if you go for that sort of thing (personally I think it's overpriced given the Alcohol content).

  • Matsos Mango Beer is incredible…I think they count as all aussie?

    • Fails 'beer' criteria.

Mildura Astor Ale case $58 from BWS. Reasonable.

  • 2 Brothers - Grizz - American Amber Ale is my favorite

  • If you're in SA's Riverland, (also available in select Adelaide establishments) Amazon Ale is a nice drop from Woolshed Brewery.. Highly recommend the drive out past Paringa to the brewery itself.. Awesome views and delicious beers!
In Clare Valley, there's a brand new Micro-Brewery in Auburn started up by one of my favourite winemakers in the region, Ben Jeanneret of Jeanneret Wines.

  • Hey guys, hate to break it to you but Vale Ale have signed with good old Gage Roads last year :P
At least GRB is still hanging in there as an island for all the smaller brewers with the international sharks circling…
