Grays Online Refurb Laptop/Tablet Sale - Asus, Sony, Toshiba - Free Delivery

40

Update: Free shipping only applies to a few of the items now so am marking this as 'expired'.

I'm not exactly a master of computer pricing but from what I can tell (staticice, OzB searches, etc.) a lot of these prices are really good. Feel free to neg the deal into oblivion if I'm wrong…

All products come with warranty, most 12 months but some 3 months.

Example products:

Sony VAIO® Fit SVF1521JCG 15.5 inch notebook (white, black or pink) $589
ASUS ZENBOOK UX32A-R3002H 13.3" Ultrabook $599
Toshiba Portege M930 13.3 inch HD Convertiable Tablet/Notebook $499
ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF201-1I102A 64GB 10.1 inch Tablet $299
ASUS VivoBook F202E-CT063H 11.6 inch Superior Mobility Notebook $249

Many other models available too.

I don't find the prices very good, to be honest. These machines are used, and their specs a bit old.

    • The Sony ain't too bad, with the dedicated graphics on board you aren't missing out too much from not having the latest i5 CPU.

I tend to avoid grays online. You can find your self paying the purchase price + Buyers premium of 17.5% + GST on top of that. So a $100 purchase could actually cost you just under $130.

That's only for the auctions. No added fees for these prices.

    • True - but when you place a bid, the next page requires you to confirm your bid and gives you a total price including the postage and buyer's premium. So it just requires a little common sense.

Buyer's premium is relatively common at auctions, eBay notwithstanding.

  • Come on Greys, bring on another round of Nexus.

    • Better not…. Took 6 weeks to repair and sent me another faulty nexus…. Haven't claim warranty yet…. Was for Christmas before I went on holiday. Now it's a brick at home waiting for another repair

Don't be fooled by "Refurbished", all of them are used and mostly repaired, yes you might be lucky to pick one in thousand which is returned without faulty.

    • +2

just don't buy "refurbished" goods from grays unless its the bargain of a life time and you know what you're getting yourself into…

      • +2

Do yourself a favour (& headaches), stick to 'Brand New' cond. tagged items.

        • Sorry for the neg… Big thumb :(
how to change it? Can't click plus anymore

        • Click on "votes" near reply and the revoke button. You can't revote (for some reason) so the best you can do is just take away the neg.

  • half interested in the vivobook for $249 they have posted, as I'm looking for a small portable laptop for overseas, and nobody is selling their netbooks, nor can you get anything reasonably priced for new. Do these have brand new batteries or are they used? I'm otherwise looking at a Lenovo x200s refurb from ebay for about $180 or so……

    • EBay x200 without battery around 130 plus new battery for 30+

      • best I've seen is $180 without a battery, or $190-$220 with a half useable battery.

i've bought laptops / netbooks from this link before and never had any issues.
      http://www.asusnotebooks.com.au/notebook/refurbished-netbook…
tell a lie, one did arrive with a little rubber foot missing but that was fixed up.
i got the ASUS VivoBook S200E-CT209H for $269 from them so pricing about similar.
they sell out of shipments pretty quickly and currently have next to nothing available.
but worth registering in case some more arrive if you are on the look out for a well-priced refurb with 12 months warranty.

      • great link - saved it for when my laptop dies. Looks like you can get a decent laptop for <$400.

        Good karma coming your way!

I believe the ASUS in this deal come with the same warranty and probably from the same refurb centre. Warranty is listed as "12 Months ASUS Certified Refurbished Products Limited Warranty".

  • Interesting post, OP, thanks.

been burned by grays too many times before

  • Based on my own past experience, refurb with Grays means "seriously second hand" and they are highly selective about which bits of the machine are "essential to performance" and therefore need to be in good order or present on delivery. Avoid.

I was looking a cheap desktop recently

I believe a haiku is supposed to have 17 syllables, usually in a 5-7-5 arrangement, for example

      Ordered one thinkpad
      Delivery thirty bucks
      Never again Grays

      • Or how about this

        Cheap desktop at Grays
        I will post on OzBargain!

I've bought about 15 laptops from Grays in the past 3 years or so. Most of them have been refurbished models, which I've bought for family and friends I provide casual "tech support" to. I'd estimate I've spent over $5000 with them in this period.

Thus far, I've generally been very happy with all of these purchases. They've all been exactly as per the description, and they are very thorough in condition reports - one of the laptops was noted to have a broken screen bezel and a scratch on the trackpad, and it was only by looking very closely that I found either fault…they were both hard to spot and the laptop looked brand new.

Two issues with my purchases so far:
    - 1 HP laptop had a faulty wireless card, which was repaired under Gray's own 30 day warranty period without dramas.
    - A Latitude tablet had a bad battery that didn't last long. The warranty explicitly excluded the battery, so I had to replace it with a new one out of my own pocket ($50). My bad luck on that one, but I did get the tablet for only $220 including postage - even after the battery replacement, I still hadn't paid anywhere near retail price.

Yes, the postage is expensive and not included in the auction price. On the plus side, the postage is actually a courier service and most of my purchases have arrived within 3 days of the auction ending. So it's a good service at least. And sometimes it's free, like now!

Buyer's premium is always something to keep an eye on too. The percentage varies between vendors, so you need to just be aware of it. Some items are sold at a fixed price with no premium, which is nicer.

That said, when you place a bid you are given a total price (including postage and buyer's premium) at the bid confirmation screen. So you can never say that you weren't warned about it.

I will continue to buy there, it's a great way of getting near-new products at massively reduced prices. You just have to do your research and make sure you know what you're getting.
