source along with a few other games; MAG, I will miss you :'(
I actually played the whole game years ago and didn't even know it had a multiplayer component besides split screen & LAN coop. Many complaints about its story continuity between 1, 2 & 3. But for a game which is essentially; classic FPS, fighting off hoards of underlings, finishing each level in a boss fight and then finishing the game in a mega boss/final last push. I am inclined to say "Story? who cares about story, I'm having too much fun!"
Gran Turismo 5 too? Damn…
Yeah I don't need story in an FPS, but I was disappointed by R3 - but then I did have high expectations.
I don't need story in an FPS
And this sort of thinking is one of the big reasons why FPSs are the most stagnant genre in the industry.
I would have thought the big reasons FPSs are stagnating is because we get recycled games each year, most of which don't focus on story but the multiplayer eg CoD, Battlefield, Medal of Honour etc with singleplayer thrown in simply to cover another demographic.
I think perhaps looking down the barrel of a gun (aka FPS) is not a suitable medium for delivering story driven content. Out of curiosity can anyone name a FPS game that did do story well?
@CyberGenesys
There is no reason an FPS can't support an interesting story. Refer to:
Half-Life Series
Bioshock Series
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Fallout 3
Halo Serieset al.
Medal Of Honor
Hmmm I guess, most of those games I see it being more the setting rather than the story, particularly Bioshock. I would have called Fallout 3 an RPG, but that's just me splitting hairs.
If you consider Halo having a story then Resistance 3 does too. The plot is 90% identical.
Have you played these games? They all have interesting/very good/excellent stories. Halo and Resistance plots 90% identical? They both feature humans vs aliens - I'll give you that. But that's where the similarity ends. Whether you like Halo's narrative or not, it's pretty hard to argue that it's not one of the most fleshed out universes in the industry.
Resistance 3/Halo plot;
- home attacked / ship attacked
- evacuate
- Discover way to destroy enemy / Captain Keyes Captured
- Doctor Fyodor Malikov captured / Discover way to destroy enemy
- Doctor Fyodor Malikov / Captain Keyes rescued, shortly after they die
- Destroy enemy wormhole / ship & save the universe
The rest is just a different setting; futuristic earth/space vs 1940s America.
I can't really comment on HL since I only played the first few levels of #2 and I just didn't care enough to play more.
From what I've played of Bioshock 1 (lots) & 2 (very little) it is the setting/style and powers that made the game. I didn't finish either, mainly because I thought the story sucked and the fun disappeared pretty fast.
On Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Fallout 3 I agree.
Medal of Honor.
Oh oh oh I got more. Borderlands 1 & 2.
Did you leave off the /sarcasim or are you being serious?
Nah I loved the stories in those games. They weren't deep or moving but they were witty and zany. I don't think another game has made me lol as much tbh. I'm on my third play through right now, still laughing.
I think we're going to have to agree to disagree. You have basically said that the games are 90% the same because they both feature humans vs aliens, and both have an introduction, conflict and resolution. Halos 2 through 4 further expanded the story and have made it to be what I think is one of the most interesting videogame universes. But to each their own.
For me HL2 is the epitome of story-telling in a game. The fact that you are always in first-person and control is never taken away from you during dialogue. The way the game and it's narrative keep rolling on through HL2 and the following episodes was quite thrilling.
Bioshock - no doubt highly atmospheric, but the story about the 1940s art-deco dystopia and it's inhabitants is also interesting. How can you say that Bioshock sucked?
It seems that you just don't much care for sci-fi genre - rather than it having anything to do with the actual games.
both have an introduction, conflict and resolution
No, I am saying both have nearly identical introduction, conflict and resolutions. It is the events that seem nearly identical, not just that they both have events
1960s art-deco dystopia and it's inhabitants
I could say the same about resistance with it's 1940's post apocalyptic dystopia and it's inhabitants. But I don't see either as story, I see that as a setting in which a story can take place.
It seems that you just don't much care for sci-fi genre
Then why would I like Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Fallout 3?
I think we're going to have to agree to disagree
Yes :P
The story takes place in 1960 - but it is a 1940s city. The story of the city - the story of its inhabitants - the story of the protagonist. That's what I was getting at.
Anyway I think we should leave it there haha. It seems that we like different sorts of games and different sorts of stories :)
I loved the campaign, never tried the MP as I was into other games at the time which was a shame as I had the collectors edition with all of the DLC.
Can't just skip it for long it would seem. 2 months till a colourful coaster?
Still priced too high for me to purchase
Any other games on sale?
They had god of war ascension the other day but i grabbed the last copy of it for $5. They had a few resistance copies left this morning.
I had resistance 3 about a year ago. Didn't like it so skipped out buying it today. But for $5 can't really complain
I really liked the single player of Resistance 3. Easily worth 5$.
Yep, me too.
Great split screen co-op title. Was tedious at some points and the second character's presence is completely ignored but it's still fun.
Forgot to mention I found the U Draw Tablet on PS3 for also $5 at Target. I know its not the best thing but it can still be used as a controller to certain games.
Yeah it's been posted a few times now. Also available for 360 and Wii.
The online servers for Resistance 3 will be shutting down soon - I can't remember when but around March 2014 I think - it was announced recently.
Personally I was disappointed by the single player campaign. It was quite buggy and very generic. Worth $5 but you could easily skip it.
