Cheap dashcam for old car?

I've thinking about getting a dash cam ever since I was almost involved in an accident where another driver cut me off. Luckily nothing happened, although I wouldn't mind getting a dash cam to use from now on. My only problem is that I don't drive my car heavily, and it is quite old as it is, so I'd like to spend as little money as possible on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? From what I've seen online so far, eBay sellers have some for around the $30 mark, but I am unsure of whether or not they will be rubbish. Ideally I would like something small-ish and with a battery as my cigarette lighter is in a silly position.

Thanks guys!

The best bang-for-your-buck would be the G1W, however it is around $55

    • Thanks for those links! The eBay listing says that it lasts about 10 minutes on the battery. Do you know if it is worth spending extra for one that has a larger battery (if they even exist)?

I'd like to just set it up, and then not have to worry about it too much, such as plugging it in/dealing with the cord dangling down the windscreen.

You could easily hide in within the sides of the windscreen
Should be able to find guides to how to hide wires within your car

        • Thanks for the tip, I found a few videos/guides on youtube where they suggest different ways of hiding the wires that will probably work for me!

One more question - do you think it is necessary to remove the camera from the mount when the car is parked? I don't really park in sketchy areas, but I guess it could give someone a reason to break in?

You can if you want, but it'll be a real inconvenience every time you get in and out of the car to set it up

Otherwise, there are compact dash cams which are relatively small

Of course, you'll be compromising on either the cost or video quality

        • The first cam that you posted seems to be quite small anyway - it should be pretty well disguised behind the mirror anyway.

Quick question regarding the 'g-sensros' in the dashcams… does that mean that they will start to record when movement is detected while the car is off? (I'm assuming this is what the 10 min battery is used for)

  • They aren't designed to run off the internal battery permanently.
It is mainly for when the ignition is turned off. It will then continue to record for a short time using the internal battery.
Estore009 has a good rep on Ebay.
You will need a Class 10 Micro SD http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231032849694?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…

  • I bought this - Car DVR K6000 Camera Video Recorder HD 1920x1080P 2.7 Inch TFT Screen (SKU063797) $28.17 including shipping.
They have increased a few dollars though. Reasonable still pics (printed) and currently being used to contest infringement notice at present time. Small cam fits behind rear view mirror.

Just an update - I ended up buying the G1W, along with a 32GB class 10 microSD card. I have hidden the power cord through the lining of the car roof and door, so it isn't noticeable at all. For a cheap setup it is going really well.
