Just wondering why they stil make non stick frypans, dont they have a toxic coating when it starts to peel off.

Or do tefal use a different type of coating? Im assuming its Intensium. Anyone know anything about this coating

Teflon which is widely used as a non-stick coating in pots and pans give off toxic fumes when heated to above 350 degrees. They are safe enough for general use (food will get burnt before it reaches this temp) the only time when I can think of that you'll need such high temperatures is for stir fries in which case just get the cast aluminium ones from the Asian stores.

As long as you don't put them in the oven or leave them on the stove unattended you'll be fine.

In so called non stick, I've had the cheapies like Tefal as well as Scanpan and Circulon - they all seem to start off well enough but it doesn't take long for things to start sticking, most notably eggs. It can be solved somewhat by using butter or oil, but that just ruins whatever you're cooking and isn't exactly healthy either.

A while back I got one of those 'stone' coated pans and expected it to be much the same but I have to say I'm surprised. In the advertorials, they show the egg sliding around the pan and amazingly, this does actually happen. I can now cook eggs and anything else with absolutely no oil and no sticking at all.

The pan now looks well used, but it's still performing like new. I don't know how long it'll last but it's already exceeded what I would have gotten with any teflon coated pan.

My advice would be to skip teflon due to reasons already mentioned and give a stone coated pan a go. I wouldn't suggest you go and buy a whole set unless that's what you really want to do, try and find just a single pan somewhere and try it out before replacing your whole kit.

    • Hey there foobar. what brand have you got? Have tried a couple of these but they didn't last long at all. Perhaps you got better branded one

      • Not sure on the brand, got it from graysoutlet when the spend 40 get 10 or 20 off vouchers were kicking around. I've just searched their site and they don't seem to have them anymore and whatever packaging it came in is long gone.

      • Ok, just had a look at the pan itself and in the middle of the base it has "Stonewell" so I guess that's the brand!

I do recall another deal here for stone pans and there was some discussion about dodgy ones where the white specs were painted on and could be lifted off with a fingernail so people still need to be careful. I took a risk and luckily it worked out alright (so far), hopefully these things become more commonplace and start showing up in major outlets so we can inspect before purchasing.

  • Had my Tefal for a few years now, and they still work like they did at day one. Great pans, and a great price!

  • The Tefal gourmet anodised ones are best ($25 for the 26cm & $29 for the 30cm) - they are oven proof and have a much better multi-layer base. Ignore the non stick naysayers - these pans are all PFOA free (the stuff that makes cheap Teflon toxic) I've had mine since the line was launched and they are fantastic for the price, MUCH better than the generic Scanpan and about on par with the IQ etc.
