Why not buy PS4 digital games for $59 instead of $99?

Hi guys, I'm sure you guys know that PSN prices for PS4 digital games are hell of a lot cheaper on the US PSN store than on the AU (AUSTRALIAN) PSN store. For example a game like BF4 (or any other AAA game) will be $99 on AU store and just $59 for US store. I read on here http://www.nowgamer.com/features/2176331/ps4_how_to_buy_us_d… how to make an US PSN account and buy games using US PSN account and play on your Australian account, so my question is, have u guys done this (on PS3 OR PS4) and share your thoughts and advice if I should do this.

BTW - FIRST FORUM POST (sorry if I made any mistakes)

  • Dunno, but I know you cant use a AUS credit card on a US account. You'd have to get merican PSN cards.

    • Nah, buy your games on Amazon using your AU card. You can also buy PSN credit there as well though which comes in handy when they give the $10 bonus credit for $60 monthly spend promos.

    • You can use your AUS Credit Card on the US account, I do. Just make your billing address something random in the US and it'll process the payments as normal. The billing address doesn't really matter in terms of validating the card.

      • Last time I tried I couldn't, neither could I use PayPal.

What makes you think people are actually buying those overpriced digital games on the AU store?

  • the answer for me is because one game is 3 times my satellite internets monthly bandwidth :(

  • even if no one would pay for the overpriced AU prices, why wouldn't you buy cause its cheap compared to retail. for example the best price you'll get for a brand new AAA game for PS4 would be around $79, at least $70 so it would make sense to buy for $59 on launch

Keep in mind that you can't resell digital acquired games.

      • Also exchange rates aren't the same as they once were.

  • I have done this on the PS3. Not because of the price difference. I had imported MK 9 from the US because it was banned in Aus at the time. Created a US account using a fake address. Then as extra DLC characters became available, I bought American PSN cards to purchase. I don't mind digital, but I prefer to buy from a store and have a case and book and build a collection.

    • I'm done with collecting. I have around 400 games sitting on shelves and just don't have the room to start another collection with PS4 so I'm primarily buying digital this time around.

  • fair enough

  • I bought FIFA 14 by buying a couple of $20 US PSN credit codes from Amazon and using those in the US PSN store. I just used the address of a hotel in Oregon (one of the tax-free states) that I found on the internet. No issues at all. I might try just buying the code for the game on US PSN directly from Amazon next time but in the comments of that link you posted, it seems Amazon have detected a few people doing it that way and stopped them.

  • New games are $59.95 on both platforms in the US anyway, so if you were a resident, theres no reason why you would use up your HDD with soft-copy games. For Australia, you can always count on OzGameShop.com ;)

I buy digital downloads because the games load quicker. That's enough reason for me. You also don't have to worry about changing discs, managing a collection of discs, worrying about them getting scratched, etc. In Australia, it means you can also get them for the cheapest price on launch day from US PSN store. Obviously for those who like reselling games, digital downloads aren't for them though.

      • fair enough, I'm still running my 128gb ps3, and i don't play it enough to warrant a ps4 as yet, (cause i work too much), but if i had time to play, and had NBN, i'm sure i would be under the same mindset

        • Yeah us PS4 digital game buyers are all lazy layabouts on welfare so its all good.

        • haha…how are you liking the PS4 so far? i'm holding off till the end of the year when more games come out. Cause i don't play a lot, i own a lot of sporting games cause they start and end in regulated time.

        • It's good, played a lot of FIFA 14 on it.

        • sweet, ye i'd usually play fifa or NBA 2k14

  • As said before, exchange rates aren't as good as they were previously. If you go to buy $60 worth of US PSN cards, it'll probably cost you around $68 (at least) for them.

If I can pick it up locally for <$10 or so difference, I'll do it. It'll save me having to wait hrs to download (and using probably 1/6 to 1/4 of my peak quota, unless I time-manage it). Anything else I'll shop around for postal or digital copies, but I figure that, at worst, I'll get a few bucks by trading in if I want to recoop the difference.

  • I paid US$35 for BF4 and Ass Pirates during the Amazon sale.

    • I'm surprised "Ass Pirates" made it past classification without the ACL kicking up a fuss. :-p

      • Just posted a new Ass Pirates deal actually.

      • Forget about "Ass Pirates", "BF" is the dodgier one!

there are few obstacles to using the PSN store, aside from the limited choices. if you intend to import games or bluray discs, make sure they are PAL though as the Playstation rejects non-PAL discs, which effectively blocks many overseas games.

    • Wrong. Overseas games work fine, there is no region locking on PlayStation products. There is region locking on a couple of third party game's multiplayer servers though - Persona 4 Arena and MGS4 (online services are now finished with MGS4 though)

Actually DLC is region locked on playstation games. The game must be from the region the account that its being played on is on for DLC to accessible.

        • I own BF4 (US) and have the Premium DLC membership (US) but play it on my AU account.

        • My "Asia Pacific" copy Alice: Madness Returns DLC won't work on my AU account :(
Now I feel majorily jipped and annoyed.

        • Make an Asian account and redeem the code on that store. Then use it with your AU account.

  • Slightly off topic but, with PSN Plus games, they're usable by any user on the PS3/PS4 even if they don't have an active PSN Plus account, right?

So, does buying these digital games only work for the particular user account on the console then?

    • Correct on the Plus question. Digital purchases also work for any account users.
