Origin Electricity and Gas Deal

I recently switched over to Red Energy who provide a 12% entire bill discount on electricity and gas.

During the 10 day cooling off period with Red Energy, I received a call from Matt who works at Origin, he said that they have received a request from Red Energy to switch me over to them (which is correct) and he said he could offer me an almost as good deal, where he would offer me a $150 credit and 15% off my electricity and 13% off my gas where I was previously getting 21%. The 21% discount is no longer available with Origin due to the competition not being as it was 2 years ago.

It turns out that it was a better deal through Red Energy but for the piece of mind, I'd rather stay with Origin Electricity and Gas.

So, if you are now out of contract with Origin and you are no longer getting any discounts, call Matt on 03 8635 3472 and he will give you the same deal he gave me.

Red Energy seems to have some pretty bad reviews which is why I decided to exit during the cooling off period.

  • Good deal.

  • Hi Op,

Thanks for the details. I found dealing with Origin has been a constant nightmare.

Not only their so called "customer service" and the "resolution team " is hopeless, their senior dispute team does not care about their customer. I used to think Origin have good reputation, but experience shows otherwise.

I was handled by more than 4 people and none of them show any care to customer.

Just my 2c and experience with Origin

  • I switched to Dodo after my discount with Origin lapsed. Been with them now for nearly two years, no problems so far!

  • I've been with origin for a few years now and haven't had a problem. I'd prefer to stay with someone I know is trustworthy. Dodo are pretty new in this sector and I've heard they've had a few issues where they have been overcharging customers. Origin is a winner for me. I hope the information provided saves someone money.

  • How did you get 12% discount?
I just made a similar switch and when I checked, the red site does state 10% off for pay on-time.

    • It may be a combination of pay on time and direct deposit discounts. 12% off the entire bill seems to be the going discount they offer right now, so I'd give them a call and see what they say.

Not sure what state you're in, but have a look at the forum below if you haven't seen it yet. Just a spreadsheet I put together comparing the different providers and the discounts/rates they offer.

Happy to help if you have any more questions, just send me a PM.

I have been with Red now for a bit, and have been quite happy with their service. I am also with Origin for gas, and despite knowing more than the customer service rep when I called, I have still been happy with them as well.

It seems all companies have "poor" reviews when you search online, so it's all about picking one you're happy with. For example, Red has better reviews than Origin at productreviews.com, but you have to take everything with a grain of salt as most people are more likely to go out of their way and take the time to right a review if they are angry and upset, than if they are happy and content.

  • Good afternoon all.

Given that Origins electricity offers vary by region I was hoping to hear what some of the best offers others have received from Origin of late for Qld metro.

I am currently seeing 9% pay on time and 1% direct debit, which is not as good as what I last received some 12 months ago.

I have also tried to contact Matt as the OP recommended yet repeatedly go through to his voicemail.

  • Hi Guys,

Please don't ring Matt direct the poor guy is getting spammed and he can't help you (THERE ARE NO DEALS IF YOU RING HIS DIRECT NUMBER) if you don't go through the process.

For existing Origin customers like myself this deal is valid but you need to make yourself a retention case by switching to another energy supplier - doesn't matter what. Once you do that it will flag on their system and Matt or his team will ring you and only then be authorised to hand you this deal to retain you.

So switch and wait for the call really, if it is getting late in the cooling off period for the other supplier then ring the main Origin line and ask for the retention department.

If you are new to Origin ring their direct line and speak to sales as Matt is in Retention and is not set up to chat with new customers swapping to Origin.

Hope this helps clear up what I learned about the path of least resistance to get this deal by flowing in with Origins process rather than cicumventing it and getting stuck like I did by ringing the above number.

    DBC =)

Or just stick with RedEnergy since you already did the work to switch, get the better deal, and be done with all the drama for a year haha. Just my two cents :)

  • It's not a matter of who is giving you the bigger discount, as all companies charge different amounts for service and supply of electicity and gas. They can jack up the price 20% and then discount it. You should also check if the discount applies to the daily supply charge or only for the service (amount you use).

  • I am in QLD and with Origin and my contract is expiring. I had a good deal with 15% off Pay on Time discount, but that is no longer available.

Now the best discount available is Origin ESaver (online) with 7% Pay on Time + 1% Direct Debit discount (do not like direct debit, so I would not consider this 1% discount)).

    Origin's tariffs are:
    Tariff 11: (Peak) 28.015 c/KWh = 28.015 -7%= 26.054 c/KWh + GST(10%) = 28.66 c/KWh
    Tariff 33: (Off Peak) 20.997 c/KWh = 20.997 -7%= 19.527 c/KWh + GST(10%) = 21.48 c/KWh
    Service to property: 83.414 c/day with no discount on this 83.414 + GST (10%) = 91.755 c/day

Just checked with DODO and apart being very pushy, they give 10% Pay on Time discount, but their tariffs are different to start with. I thought base tariffs were government regulated in QLD (I am correct?)! These are the numbers:
    Tariff 11: (Peak) 25.25 c/KWh = 25.25 -10%= 22.725 c/KWh + GST(10%) = 25 c/KWh
    Tariff 33: (Off Peak) 18.40 c/KWh = 18.40 -7%= 16.56 c/KWh + GST(10%) = 18.216 c/KWh
    Service to property: 82 c/day with no discount on this 82 + GST (10%) = 90.2 c/day

Now I am not sure if the tariffs they gave me already had the discount applied to them. The pushy guy i spoke with at DODO told me that the discount was on top (so my calcs above should be right). Anybody can confirm?

It looks like Origin is 15 to 18% more expensive on the c/KWh after all dicounts and GST have been applied. Anybody can confirm if I am right?
