Centrelink Benefits and Travel

I am planning on heading overseas for an extended holiday period of approximately 3 months subject to my current employment contract ending in March, am I allowed to apply for and receive unemployment/centrelink benefits during this time?

nope. you can't get newstart when out of the country.

i assume to get benifits you actually need to be actively looking for work, not holidaying.

    • job seeker. it's all in the name :)

Some benefits are available during trips abroad for a limited time (e.g. family allowance) and others in some circumstances (e.g. family emergencies).
The page you want is here:

I think if everyone did what you plan to do, then our country would go broke.

I think you might be wildly overestimating how much Centrelink pays the unemployed!
Note that payments like pensions are available in this circumstance, so it isn't that wild a question.

Life is hard with a AAA credit rating.

Some would argue that at nearly half a trillion dollars we are not far away… if it wasn't for the revenue collected from our natural resources then we would be just another greece. http://www.australiandebtclock.com.au/

Another person who doesn't understand how government debt works. All too common these days.

We may have half a trillion dollars of debt, but once the revenue and other earnings come in we only owe about $20 billion which is nothing for a country like Australia.

        • Alexandar, Try asking yourself why we need to run a deficit at all when our country has such vast mineral wealth? Why has 90% of the deficit been racked up in the last 20 years with no end in sight? Why is it the job of future generations to inherit the debt? Where did all the money go? Why are we so comfortable in depending on the worlds appetite for our resources to service the debt? What has our country got to show for all this debt? When will it stop? Your flawed logic provides no answers at all other than revenue pays for it all. It's just like saying I have a 20k credit card at x interest rate but if doesn't matter if I can't pay it off because I have a job for the moment and I will just keep revolving the interest commitments from month to month.

The country will never 'go broke'. They own the Mint, so they just do what governments all around the world do - print more money.

      • true in part, only "we" don't own the reserve bank. Just like the federal reserve in the US is not owned by them. They are private banks entirely separate from the executive branch. The debt to a degree is fictional but it won't stop them passing over the fictional debt to posterity to inherit.

So you want the government to pay you a fortnightly unemployment/jobseeker allowance while you holiday for 3 months? If your that hard off for a dollar why are you going on a holiday?

"yeah Hi, Centrelink? I am going on a trip around the world staying in hotels and having a good time for the next three months - how about you pay me for this experience? thanks…"

the stupidity in this thread is amazing

Ring Centrelink 136 240 and get the official answer you're after.
Ask them for rent assistance while you're at it.

And when you return from your 3 months holiday, return by boat and you'll revceive an abundance of grants and benefits.

Meantime, I'll keep slogging away while thinking about you.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

  • If hop a plane they automatically know you've left the country. Now if you could find a way around that…

If I got paid to go on a 3 month holiday, I'd go on one tomorrow. How dumb would the government have to be to bankroll your holiday…

  • When you finish work (you said your contract is ending) you will be paid a lump sum - of course presuming you have leave owed, all income paid on the final pmt will be considered by centrelink in calculating if and when you may be eligible. In most cases you have to wait min 8 wks to get the first payment (not quite sure for contract ending as apposed to quitting or being fired) but most likely at least 4 wks…AND you will be expected to apply for 10 to 15 jobs per fortnight, face up to centerlink AND a Job Network Agency each fortnight. So being on the dole is not an easy occupation (not as simple as many think) and finding a job when you are too old to be paid less than $15 an hr is getting harder and harder. My 26yr old daughter and her 28yr old girl friend try so hard to get work but 18 (or less) yr olds keep getting the jobs because employers can pay them a lot less. Good luck with your holiday but i think expecting the Unemployment benefit while not in the country nor intending to look for work is a bit steep.

    • Unfortunately I am a contractor (no sick or leave) so when I finish the money stops instantly.

  • I have pretty much not worked this whole financial year, tried so many jobs and keep getting knock back after another pretty much lived off savings.
Which came to the point it was time to ask Centrelink for help and get new start allowance to see if they can help, only been with them a few months now.
My question is as funds are pretty limited these days are you required or still asked to do a tax return? I have done one each year as I was in work on and off,but this year not once.
The fee for doing a tax return is not that cheap when your not making the wage so was wondering in this situation what do you do.

    • This is a pretty old thread you have resurrected. If you have been in paid employment and paid tax in this financial year it will be in your best interest to submit a tax return as it is likely you will get a refund. You don't have to use a tax agent you could do it yourself via the Mygov website. Good luck with your job hunting I hope you find your dream job soon.

      • But i aint been working that's what im asking, so would there be any point as i have not earned anything from employment?
