I can recommend getting the camera with australian 2 year warranty from
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Olympus-OMD-EM1-Body-2-Year-Olymp…
http://stores.ebay.com.au/Aus-Cam-Sales
http://auscamsales.com.au/
It's maybe $140 more expensive than the cheapest gray stock I could find on staticice, but remember they come with 2 year australian warranty and once you pay import fees and duties it works out a similar price.
I haven't purchased from these people yet, but I have contacted them and the owner seems nice. I am planning on purchasing a lens from them in the future. I know there selection of lenses isn't that great for your camera so maybe you could get the lens as gray stock and the camera as australian stock.
eBay is the go if you want to get the biggest range and cheapest price on second hand old school film SLRs….. If you don't have your heart set on the Olympus you can always get a new Nikon FM10 or Vivitar V3800N.
Do you want a film camera or a DSLR? you cannot have both. Well, you can but I doubt you want to shell out for a Leica R(x) with a digital back
If you are after a film camera, I suggest going up the road to Camera lane on little bourke st and hardware lane. they have a selection of second hand camears in their window. A rough second hand value via ebay:
Nikon F3 is about $300 and Nikon Fm2 is about $200.
I recommend a Nikon F3. at one point I had 4 of them.
I believe they have a F3 and FM2 and Olympus om-something in their window.
3rding ebay and adding Gumtree. Also Pentax K-1000 is worth a look. The current Pentax digital cameras are still compatible with all the old K-mount glass, although obviously only with the features of the lens (it doesn't magically make a manual lens auto), so you can share lenses. I find this useful for uncommon kit I use every once in a while, like a 300mm tele that I can deal with manual and save thousands on a new lens.
What's a DSR?
I think OP means a SLR camera…?
Wait for the next camera market happening on March 16 at Box Hill Town Hall - http://www.apcsociety.com.au/market.html
You could also go to a Melbourne Silvermine meet and see if someone is selling one (http://www.flickr.com/groups/msm/discuss/). They are a small drinking club with an analogue camera problem.
Thanks guys, it's a typo, I mean SLR film camera :)
And thank you all for your advices.
Special thanks to photonaturally, I will go and have a look tomorrow :)
Thanks Marcusv also, I've seen the flickr (from your link). Good info and I will mark my calendar to visit the camera market on Mar 16 :)
eBay. If you follow the offerings in the search category/ies of your choice for a month or two, you'll identify specialist sellers (usually international), who offer such items regularly and have established a history of satisfied purchasers. You'll also build up a good feel for pricing (and maybe the occasional scam). Take your time - learning the market before diving into it will prove well worthwhile.
For payment, my own experience with Paypal has been that their buyer protection works well, so the risk of such international purchases is not much greater than buying locally where, as you have found, the selection is likely to be very limited.
