I have to agree. For some reason a further % off with a coupon some how seems more appealing than a straight discounted price.

A discount applies to everyone, a coupon is only for those that know. So coupons benefit the retailer in their quest to proce discriminate their customers.
I thought for us ozb professionals, it is the final price that matter? Coupon or direct discount is somehow irrelevant.
I am wondering how many times when you spotted "Coupon Code" at check out, couldn't find any working coupon code from a sea of spammy sites out there, and end up abandoning the cart because you know it could potentially cost less? Some argue that bad implementation of coupon code actually gives bad experience to the shoppers.
I have thougt that many times, AND it has changed my mind.. I google search the crap out of the internet looking for that extra 10% or whatever it may be.
Recently car hire, accomodation at Surfers, nearly every site has a spot to enter a coupon.. I have codes for most car rentals though.. Ended up using Apex car hire and it was $75 cheaper with no codes.
Even yesterday, I was looking for discounts for Kryal Castle near Ballarat, $32 each was too much, found expired half price groupon and scoopon codes.. So today, I'm doing something else, cheaper.. Because I know, one day those discounts will return…
Simple, label the box Promotion Code, or Gift Code or something like that to distinguish it as something "special" so the buyers think, ah ok, not this time but I must keep an eye for specials next time. Hooked!
