Windows 7 Ultimate

We have a main computer and a sewing computer in our house. The main one is on the internet and runs on Windows 7 Ultimate. The sewing computer isn't hooked up yet. My wife now tells me that she wants her sewing computer to be able to go online. My questions are, would I be able to install Windows 7 Ultimate off of my original disks and then buy a key. Should I buy new disks, with their own key. What would you do and what is the cheapest way of doing it. Thanks for your time reading this.

  • Gday SuperMick (Like your handle)

You havent really explained in detail your needs.. Let me prompt you.

    1. Is the sewing Computer running windows (any flavour)?
    2. Is the main PC connected via wifi or ethernet cable?
    3. Is your connection to the net via a 3G/4g dongle or ADSL/CABLE?
    4. What exactly is a sweing computer?

    Regards Mick (not Super obviously)

  • Hi Mick, I wanted to be Mick, but someone else had that name, so this was one of the options.
    1. The sewing computer is running XP, she wants to have windows 7, as many of her programs now won't run on XP.
The main reason for going on the internet, is that most of the programs that she has, need to be verified
online. Also the help features won't work without an internet connection.
    2. The main computer is connected via wifi from a modem. When our son visits, he always brings his laptop to
    use in our house.
    3. Our connection to the net is via a satellite NBN connection. We live in rural Western Australia and have
    satellite for internet and TV.
    4. My wife is into sewing, and she can connect her machine into a computer to run sewing programs off of that
computer. Its not a specialised computer, I'm sorry if I made it sound like one.

So going back to my questions, would I be able to install Windows 7 Ultimate off of my original disks and
    then buy a key.
Should I buy new disks, with their own key. Really what's the cheapest way of doing it.

    Thanks Mick

  • Yes you can use the same disks, you'll just need to buy a new product key.

  • Just a thought. Would I be able to use the same disks and product key, that I have now, on her computer. If I upgrade the main computer to Windows 8
    Thanks

    • It depends if you got an OEM or a Retail copy, if OEM, it's against the EULA, but I've done it before and it activates okay, so I guess if it's not really right but if you activate and it works okay, well it works.

      • I had a cheap dell with the OEM Windows7 and when I moved on to a bigger desktop I was able to use the same key with a different motherboard. Afterwards Windows asked me to use phone activation to complete activation. It works fine now.

  • I doubt you'd need Ultimate for the sewing machine PC- just buy an OEM copy of Home Premium.

    Cheers

  • There is also the issue of machine specs
I presume the 'sewing' computer is old/older as it is running XP

Simply - It is possible that it won't run Windows 7 very well
If too old and under powered Win 7 would probably install but then crawl along
Post the machine details here for an opinion if you like

I suggest you connect the XP computer to the internet and try it first
Most software should run under XP and validate once internet is working
Win 7 is nicer and easier but not if the machine can't handle it

And if you do end up wanting a licence (and the machine is older) hunt around for a 2nd hand machine with better specs and a licence included
Ex corporate desktops 3yrs old with Win 7 licences can be had under $200 - sometimes close to $100 - and may be a better machine than your current AND have the Windows 7 licence

    • Windows XP is unsafe to use since Microsoft is going to pull the plug on security updates. If the computer is connected to the internet, it is best to go with 7.

Ex corporate desktops 3yrs old with Win 7 licences can be had under $200 - sometimes close to $100 - and may be a better machine than your current AND have the Windows 7 licence

This is a better idea. Could try BudgetPC.com.au and see what they offer.
