Reid Falco Advanced Road Bike (105/Tiagra) $521.05 or with Upgraded Mavic Aksium ($701.05)

350
VIP

Stumbled upon this great deal for an entry-level road bike, it's got a mix of Shimano 105 and Tiagra parts along with an aluminium frame.

15% off the RRP of $799 doesn't equate to $579, surely they've made a mistake here. The Advanced is even cheaper than the Sport ($594), even though the Advanced is one level higher than the Sport!

It is widely recommended on BNA (http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/) to upgrade to the Mavic Aksium wheelset (http://www.reidcycles.com.au/mavic-aksium-road-bike-wheel-se…) as they would cost $314 from Reid Cycles or $260 from CRC (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/mavic-aksium-race-r…) by themselves.

So for the Reid Falco Advanced with upgraded Mavic Aksium wheels, it comes to $778.95.
Now apply the coupon code 'VIP' for a further 10% discount.

Brings it down to $701.05 for a Reid Falco Advanced with upgraded Mavic Aksium wheelset!

I've bought one for myself as I'm just starting out! For $700, it's a lot of kit! Especially brand new!

All the best!

Note the Tektro brakes and Quando hubs. So its a mix of 105, Tiagra, Tektro and Quando parts.

    • Yup, to get full 105 components you need to upgrade to the Falco Elite.

  • great price for a bike with 105 shifters and derailleurs.

  • For an amateur, is there a need for the wheel set ? Tempting…

    • +3

if the standard one is still the alex wheels wheelset they were offering, then definitely upgrade.

      • Alex wheels are terrible - no idea why I haven't swapped mine out on my Giant Seek 2. Terrible rim.

    • +2

I'd recommend upgrading the wheels, the wheels it comes with are very heavy and make the ride feel somewhat dull.

  • very good prices.. I think I'd go a bit higher up the range and away from those quandro hubs though

Im actually at the store in glebe, sydney and apparently it's a glitch that won't be honored.. What's the go with glitches?

The VIP discount won't be honored**

    • What happened if it's been paid for online? is there a lawyer/expert in Ozbargain can enlighten us the contract law on internet shopping.

      • +1

        Hi..

If you have the receipt to show the transaction was accepted at the discounted price then technically they must honour it.

I you paid but have not received a receipt yet, they can say that there was an error and retract the offer and refund your payment, as the transaction had not fully completed from their end.

If you have a receipt showing the transaction was completely accepted unequivically and you wish to force them to honour the contract of sale, you might want to consider if it would be worth the trouble and time?

I certainly wouldn't advise you to lodge a claim in the small claims court over an amount less than a couple of hundred dollars, mainly because although you may have a good case, nothing is guaranteed, and you may end up being on the receiving end of a costs order and court fees worth far more than the amount you argue about.

You could ask Dept Fair Trading to look into it for you, they do all the hard work, and depending on your financial position may or may not require you to pay an application fee (non refundable)

It may be a better deal for you to write the retailer an email reminding them of their contractual obligations and that it will cost them more to defend a claim then it would to simply honour the sale :) Works for me quite often :)

        Hope that helps a bit..

        Cheers

        Pookie

15% off the RRP of $799 doesn't equate to $579,

That's because $579 is probably their normal price…

You'll be glad to see this one comes with pedals !

  • lol nice find jv

  • What's the difference between Advanced and Elite?

    Thanks!

    • Better part specs. Its almost a full 105 groupset. Not sure if the frame and fork are the same but with a different paint job though.

  • The $579 price has been advertised for a while, they even have ads on GumTree.

VIP discount makes it even sweeter.

$701 with Aksium wheels is a great price.

I would have got this bike in a flash, but I am looking for a bike with a Relaxed riding geometry and I believe the Falco has a racing geometry.

    • interesting - can you shed more light on what brand road bike in your opinion has more of a 'relaxed' riding geometry?

        1. Felt Z Series (ex Z85)
        2. Raliegh Revenio Series (ex Revenio 3)
        3. Giant Defy series (between relaxed and race)
        4. Specialized secteur
        5. Scott CR 1 (? not sure yet)
        • Trek Domane
          Specialized Roubaix
          Cube GTC

Almost all the brands now have an 'endurance' geometry bike. I bought the Trek Domane for the 'IsoTrap' module that allows the seatpost to move and soak up the bumps without soaking up any of my energy. If it's good enough for cancellera, it's good enough for me! That said, my Trek Domane cost several multiples of the deal mentioned here!

    Just tried entering the code.

"Coupon code "VIP" is not valid."

    • it works this morning.

      • Indeed. Doesn't help me buy it now though. :)

  • According to the REID VIP page at http://www.reidcycles.com.au/vipclub.html

"As a big thank you for buying from Reid Cycles, you will automotically become a VIP customer and receive our transferrable VIP card!

This means that if you, your family or your friends want to buy a bike or accessory in store or on line from us in future, the cardholder will receive 5% off bikes and 10% off any accessories on our already great pricing! How good is that?! So tell your friends, and then they can ride with you too!

    Happy Riding!"

So, any OZBargain member want to help spread the love and assist with 5% discount on a bike today? Will shout you a free lunch at the local Korean restaurants nearby (seriously good BBQ)

    • I also need a 'friend' to purchase with a discount :)

      • We should organise an OZBargain meetup of sorts! ;) Might even be a little bit of fun

    • I bought this today (with another bicycle) and they gave me the 5%. You can try just ask for the 5% discount :)

      • Can you upload the invoice?

        • yes please, a copy of the invoice would help everyone here Xpire and be greatly appreciated :)

      • I emailed the store in globe and the lowest price is 778.95
Offered to buy another bike. 6 speed vintage bike for the mrs and no deal.

  • How does this frame compare to the Specialized Allez Sport Compact?

    http://www.bikeradar.com/au/gear/category/bikes/road/product…

    • specialized has the name, can't comment on the frame, both alloy so wouldn't expect a great diffrence in terms of ride, however the groupset and upgraded wheels of this deal make it a better choice in my opinion. Saw the Specialized for $899 on special, an extra $200 for lower spec groupset and wheels, but better name.

Wheels make a big difference, if near a store, go in and get them to size your bike, adjust seat height etc

  • If anybody is worried about the corners cut in the groupset, you can usually pickup heavily discounted genuine 105 components in the many online sales at Wiggle, Chain Reaction, Merlin or Ribble! Brake calipers etc go for cheap in their sales.

  • Does the code still work? I enter it, but nothing happens

  • +2

Still waiting for the Falco Elite to go on sale or have a decent bundle going! Been waiting about 4 or 5 months now I think. No dice…

  • i'm a noobie. i know nothing about bikes. i want to ride to work 6km flat roads every day (10-15km daily). how often would i need to "service" the bike? how hard is it to service the bike, do i need many tools?

  • thought u all might like to know those wanting to purchase it - they don't have stock for 2 weeks

    • Which store did you call to ask? I placed my order yesterday…

      • the sydney one - and that was for the medium too. they only have the L in stock

    • I just bought one today in medium. They said they were getting more stock in tomorrow. This is for the Melbourne store

      • Do you get that extra 10 percent? If does, can you share it

  • Can any one share the invoice with the purchase of 701 dollars? I'm in Perth , my email: [email protected]

  • is anyone concerned about the generic sizing as opposed to the cm unit of measure used most commonly in road bikes?

How much better is it compared to this bike for a complete noob? Will the $299 bike break down more often and cost more in the long run?

    • It's not so much about breakdowns, more how everything is a whole lot more efficient. Less chain issues, cleaner gear changes, less noise, less weight, and how you receive 'feedback' from the road.

If you're not going to fly down a highway at 60km/h, reliability should be okay. But i'm not much of an expert on bikes anyway.

  • Sadly, the code has expired.

  • Price has gone up to $679 or $879 with the wheel upgrade. Also as earlier mentioned, the code is no longer valid.

  • Not sure about the other stores but the Glebe store reps have something wrong with them. Maybe too many OZBers went in to ask? Serious attitude problem…

    • +1

Probably because they are doomed to be bike salescritters forever!
