Need a new Modem/Router with really good signal strength.

I currently have Optus cable internet using Netgear CG3000 modem that Optus provided me 3 years ago.
I made a forum post asking how to boost its signal and was told it was not a good modem and best to replace.
I really know nothing of these things so I need help. I have the modem connected in the main bedroom and need it to reach out the backyard but it just reaches my back door and is very very weak.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can buy just a Wifi Router like a Netgear N600 or something depending on how much you want to spend, and plug in via Ethernet cable (New router to Optus router connected via ethernet cable) in to the Optus Netgear modem router, disable wifi on the Optus router, and have the same wifi settings like SSID and password (WEP/WPA key) as the existing wifi. Basically, you will have to turn off DHCP and assign a static IP to the new router and keep the same (Optus router) as your default gateway.

    • PLA74 is 100% correct.

I saw your previous post, answered your previous post, as did quite a few others. So I must say I'm surprised to see you ask the exact same thing again.

I saw a lot of people told you to replace the modem, but I think they did not read your post properly, or were too quick to write back to you.

I DID notice you said CABLE modem, as did PLA above obviously. Sure you can go anywhere and buy another ADSL modem/router and easy to replace, CABLE not so much.

So - this IS the correct answer - you can stop asking the same thing.

1> Buy a good wireless router. I would suggest you go straight for an 802.11ac model with multiple frequencies and channels, to get the maximum speed, range, and future proofing. If it can go in to modem bridging mode EVEN BETTER.

2> Connect it up as per PLA74 said above. Done.

Now, I PERSONALLY prefer in a situation like this to do it a little backwards. I like to change the original modem/router into "DUMB MODEM" mode, and let the new router do everything. I feel things are easier and more robust doing it that way, but you can ONLY do that IF the original Netgear has the capability to do that. Of that I'm not sure and can't tell you.

Look, I get the feeling (especially as you're asking again) that you don't have any confidence in doing this. I really in your case suggest calling a technician to do it for you.

If you're in Perth let me know and I'll arrange something with you, otherwise see if you can find a reputable mobile technician.

    • I'm in Brisbane QLD so can arrange something with you if ur located in Brisbane as well!

  • you better off buying a new modem, which is n600 or n900 but if your house is too long then might consider a wifi extender like WD MyNet Wi-Fi Range Extender for $18 @MSY

He has a CABLE modem - you cannot replace it that simply.

      ALSO:

Yuk - please don't consider extenders unless you really have to.

      1> Bigger antennas.
      2> Wired Access Point
      3> Extenders if you can't do 1 or 2.

I'm not going to go into why again - this discussion has been done to death on an older post.

      Regards,
      Ed.
